German food meet Italian food. Now let’s put you on top of it and, voila! We have a true pizza. This South Minneapolis pizza joint is famous for a few things--being a cop hangout, a Minneapolis staple its sauerkraut pizza, a combination of bitter, sweet, tangy and saucy.

  2. 2 4 Star Rating: Recommended Pearson's Edina Restaurant

    3808 W 50th St, Minneapolis, MN 55410 (map)

This Edina restaurant is known for its early-bird specials and after-church breakfasts. But it also serves up lutefisk, that pickled, aged, pickled and aged again--fish the Norwegians brought over and buried long, long ago. It comes with Swedish meatballs for $3 extra.

  3. 3 Himalayan Restaurant

The word "yak" isn’t exactly pleasant. And Twin Citians are known to get squeamish over buffalo burgers, let alone dumplings made with meat from that oh-so unpleasant word. But these tender and delicious dumplings from this Nepali restaurant on Franklin are worth getting over your deep-seated fear of "yak".

  4. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Ingebretsen Gift Shop

1601 E Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55407 (map)

Yes, this Lake Street store specializing in all things Scandinavian also sells things like lutefisk, smoked salmon and the delicacy known as fishballs. What exactly are they? They’re what the store calls cod fishballs served in...brine. Does it get any fishier than that?

  5. 5 Burger Jones

3200 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55416 (map)

Even for meat lovers, this thing is super scary. Think of it as a combination of all things at the State Fair, but instead of going on a stick, they get slapped between two buns. If that temps you, head out to this St. Louis Park burger joint for a giant burger topped with chicken-fried bacon, fried cheese curds and a oozing mess of Velveeta.
