Stainless-steel architecture and a quirky collection make this a distinctive site.. The Space Everyone has an opinion about this gleaming, screaming architectural sculpture jutting up from the east end of the Washington Avenue Bridge. Since its opening in 1993, the Weisman's unorthodox exterior has hogged attention from the 12,000 feet of display space parceled into four airy, naturally lit, rectangular galleries.
The Work Inside, the Weisman's collection is most respectable and intriguingly eccentric. But despite its art-palace presence, the Weisman's mission is modest. With interdepartmental lectures, campus events and required visits by freshmen in composition class, the Weisman is a teaching museum happy to graduate students onto the larger art vistas of Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
