Great Food, Great Service, brings back memories!. My husband and I brought our 4 year old grandson here after a children's stage show at the State Theater. We usually park in Macy's parking ramp when we go to the State Theater, so eating there before or after is convenient. Our waitress, Mae was wonderful! She was so helpful and accommodating. We explained that our grandson has many food allergies and we had brought special food for him to eat. She even heated it in the microwave for us! She could not have been nicer! My husband had the Glazed Salmon with mashed potatoes and I had the Strawberry Chicken Salad with Walnuts. The food was delicious, perfectly prepared. It was the perfect place for dinner for the three of us after the show. A great place to make a memory!
Great service and carefully prepared food reasonable prices. My daughter and I went here after reading the reviews. It was funny walking through Macy's to the elevator to the 12th floor where the restaurant was. Once inside the restaurant the atmosphere changes .. it is warm woods and a fireplace. Very cozy. Our waitress was wonderful and explained some of the food. The food was excellent. Their popovers were a BIG surprise-good enough for a dessert! The salmon dinner was cooked perfectly. My daughter's stir fry was enough for two! and very good. We may come back here again during our stay as there was enough on the menu to satisfy all types of appetites. Service again was excellent!!! After dinner it was again funny to go from wonderful dining to shopping at Macy's..
Great service, great food. Heard about this restaurant in the Marshall Field's cookbook I have. Wife and I had excellent meal experience here. First time visit. Waitress and front-of-house were friendly, warm and professional. Popover was served before mail...nice popover but butter was a little sweet for my liking. I had caramelized salmon and wife had pork medallions. Both were excellent. Price was very reasonable for the quality of food, atmosphere and location. We will be going back for sure.
Romantic Pre-Theater Dining.
On a suggestion from a friend that frequents this establishment, my wife and I visited the Oak Grill before going to see the musical Sweeny Todd which was playing a block away at the State Theater, so needless to say that the Oak Grill was conveniently located for us to walk.
Our dinner was a perfect start to a romantic evening. The service was fantastic, the ambience was fabulous (we sat near the fireplace), and the wine and food were reasonably priced and scrumptious; fine dining at an affordable price and without the snobby staff, who would have guessed? They also validated our parking!
I have since been to the Oak Grill for lunch and I have to say that they have a loyal customer now!!
Best kept fine dining in Minneapolis and Minnesota at large..
The Oak Grill remains a secret to so many people, which is a blessing and a shame. A shame for those missing out on exquisite cuisine and a blessing because fellow patrons and myself don't have wait forever for a table.
Gourmet food, wonderful atmosphere, and excellent servers together make for a scrumptious lunch or romantic dinner, or a romantic lunch or scrumptious dinner.
The popovers, free with every meal, usually arrive piping hot and with sweet cream on the side.
The butternut squash ravioli, a perennial fave, is a wonderful mixture of flavors and tastes, also it's vegetarian.
The steak salad, mine with steak done medium, is so fresh and flavorful from the crisp greens to the shoestring potatoes and tomatoes.
Their vegetables are always fresh, succulent green beans with sea salt, whipped sweet potatoes with a little brown sugar.
The wine list is decent and the bar is well stocked.
Desserts are uniformly excellent, the banana split is a measured delight of ice cream, chocolate, and fruit; the frango mint ice cream pie is rich, yet refreshing; last, but not least, is the signature key lime pie, cool, tart, sweet, crumbly crusted goodness sized for two.
Another wonderful feature is a monthly specials menu developed by the chefs that take part in all the prepared food you find at Daytons (I refuse the Macys moniker and the hideous white floor in cosmetics). There is usually an appetizer, a salad, an entree or two, and a dessert. Often there is a theme, be it regional food, flavor, or base taste (sweet, sour, salt, etc...). These items are worth coming back for a few times a month, if only to experience the specials items. Then again, it is worth it to come a few more times a month on top of that to revel in the main menu items that become old favorites (they even seasonally change the main menu to reflect local produce in season and holiday specific delights).

Popovers and More. Marshall Fields' Oak Grill was our lunch stop on a busy Christmas shopping day. Although the room is somewhat dark (a nod back to its days as a men-only spot), the mood was brightened by Christmas decorations. The popovers, as always, were hot and melted in your mouth. I tried the herb-crusted pork medallions, which were served with garlic mashed potatoes and a picked cabbage of some sort. Delicious, but too much food for this diner! My companion had a turkey sandwich that was finger lickin' good, to borrow a phrase. This out of the way dining spot is worth the special effort it takes to find it.
Gourmet Food at Reasonable Prices. One of my all-time favorite restaurants. The menu changes regularly, but the favorites stay put. The prices are incredibly good for such excellent food. Lunches can get crowded & noisy. Best time is at 6:00 p.m. when you can enjoy the food & atmosphere. I've never had anything I didn't like & they do theme food if Marshall Field's is having a promotion (English or French specials if the Spring Garden show is set there, for example). The pasta dishes are exceptionally good.
