Good music and a cool building. First of all let me just say that the music at Station 4 is almost always incredible. It seems like they always have a different local band playing their own good version of hard rock or metal, but there's always the occasional cover band or something to mix it up. Watch out for the drinks they're stupidly strong - just what I want out of a great dive bar. I've been back a few times and I'll be back again!
great staff. I was concerned about taking 2 fourteen year old girls downtown for an all ages concert, but the experience tuened out to be exceptional. A bunch of us mom's hung out in the bar area (where all the bands actually were haning out too) Steve, the owner, was friendly and helpful. The drinks were wickedly strong. All the starff were friendly and really good with the kids. The bar actually reminded me of some of the ones I hung out in college.
Good Metal, thug staff=Good time distractions.
Let me start by saying, I've been to this bar many of times, through many incarnations and names! So it has always not been bad.
So for the best review I'll stay unbiased, but extremely informative!!
1. Music-Usually hard rock, but they manage to pull in some very good 80's to 90's acts as well some good newer stuff. No complaints here.
2. Look- Dive bar atmosphere, good set up
3. Staff- Couple of nice bartenders, but one (who happens to be the owner as well, extremely rude, you'll know who i'm talking about when you see a haggard grumpy looking 50 something lady, well just stay away) Another downfall is the door people/bouncers. As I sip my beer I can't but help hear about these meathead thugs talk about beating up smaller jrs. that they themselves used to be. You look funny you will be kicked out. Again avoid the the short bald guy with lil' man disease!
4. Food- Not bad at all for bar food! could be improved upon but there staff is far from cooks. They carry Heggies pizza if your a fan.
5. Parking- can be a pain, but if your planning on drinking anyways , plan it out with friends!
6. Other- Lots of dart boards, big buck hunter, pinball, outside rvsp for smokers, again, i've seen cokehead staff kick out concert goers very annoying to watch 30 something guys beat up and threaten little kids!
Pretty decent places to hang out!. I've been to this bar numerous of times and enjoyed the atmosphere there. The bartenders are cool and very talkative. I've been there when bands are playing and they have some decent bands that play there. I notice that some of the complainers argued about the service and the bands not getting paid for their performance. One, they probably had a lot of their friends on the get in free list or they probably play terribly. LOL. Times I've been there they had some decent bands. I think it is great for a place to get local bands there to play there and if you don't get paid get more of your friends to come or don't put them on the VIP list. VIP list are when you go big. I met the Owner and the others who work there and think that they have a great thing going for themselves. I just can't believe that some of these bands think that it not a good place to play; I think that they should be happy they get to play any where, even if they don't play well. Other places are hard to get into. The foods there are great and love their pizzas and fried food. Their specials they have everyday are a neat idea and sure it will help them out. I've brought my friends there and they have like it and told me they would come back again. I love it that they have opened at noon, now I can go there for my lunch. They got a little bit to go for a Five Star rating from me, but I give them a 4.
bad service and bad decor. This is the worst bar i have been to since I have been legal. bad service and bad decor. I cannot imagine a more insulting bar
Don't Waste Your Time at this Place!. This place is a dump, smells like you walked in to a deep fryer, and the woman who owns the place is unbelievably rude. She also works as the bartender....so good luck getting a drink. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE AGAIN!!!!
Great place for bands to perform and for folks to enjoy a big sound and good beer.
We performed here a while back and I must say this is a good sized venue. The stage was a great size, sound was great, lighting was so-so. The bar area, and the crowd area are really big, so if you're playing for 10 friends, you're playing to a really empty hall. Heck, even 45 people barely filled up 20% of the place.
Beer was good, but they ran out of Premium. Food was pretty decent too.
This place has a lot of pros and a few cons. We really enjoyed our experience there, beyond any cons this place has, I highly recommend checking it out for a few shows. The sound system will make you feel like you're at the Xcel or First Ave, but houses a much fewer patrons.

Dump...and so not a rock club!.
I've lived in St. Paul for years and used to visit the club when it was Ryan's-the food old days! Station 4 is a dump and the female owner (asked to speak to the manager becuase she was so rude and the guy at the door said she was the owner) is very rude; had friends perform there a a month ago and the club cheated them on their pay-spoke with other bands and apparently they do that often.
And aren't they supposed to be a rock club?! Attempted to stop in a few weeks back to grab a quick drink and they had some rap concert going on!?... ended up at a cool little club next door-highly recommended!
Bottom line Station-4 is a dump and my guess is that they're on the way out!! Somebody please open a cool rock club in St. Paul because these guys don't have a clue!!
"Used to". This place has a lot of "used to's" Used to be Ryan's, used to be the heavy metal playground the "Lab" . Now it knows what is important to a Music club -an upgraded, new kick ass sound system, a new beer tap line-up with my international favorites including Wittekerke, Paulaner, Bass, Guiness, New Castle and a bunch more, and a diverse music scene and crowd. Leave the past - try it out.
