Excellent German cuisine and an authentic milieu. Friends from the West Coast entertained my partner and me to dinner at this wonderful, hidden restaurant. Having lived in Minneapolis/St. Paul most of my life, I was surprised to learn that this cuisine is about 20 minutes away in beautiful downtown Hudson. The atmosphere is as authentic as you can get to a small Gasthaus in Germany. (It actually reminded of a place in Dresden.) The food was ausgezeichnet and delicious and the service was excellent as well. The prices were amazing (there is a dinner special on certain nights of the week and a schnitzel special at certain hours). I'm going back. I'm taking friends. This experience is so much better than a certain well-known German restaurant in Minneapolis that overcharges on mediocre cuisine. Seriously, run, don't walk!
Journey across the St. Croix River to Hudson for a taste of Germany..
In Short
The cozy, downstairs dining room (in the basement of Hudson's old Opera House) evokes authentic Gemütlichkeit--the good-time ambience integral to dining out in Germany. Snug wood booths are enchanting and private; tabletops are covered in snowy white linens. Besides accordion music on the sound system, a friendly bar and beer steins everywhere, you'll find hearty portions like smoked pork chops, knackwurst and beef roll-ups. For dessert, have the flaky, homemade apple strudel.
Oh, that cabbage!. We had the Sunday night special and it was great. I would rather eat here than the Schumacher Inn in New Prague. The red and white cabbage dishes were so good and the atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. Walking back up the stairs after eating here....not so fun! Can't wait to go back someday.
