St. Paul >Solo Vino
Came to Solo Vino for the first time for a pre-concert gathering, needliess to say I will never visit again.
The individual serving what was a very nice, and relatively inexpesive, bottle of red from Austria stated that he was the "owner." When I commented that it was very good and a wine that I had never heard of, he gave a sarcastic "O, OK" and proceeded to turn back to the friends he was socializing with, as if I was an idiot and he had no time to converse with me or talk about the wine, which is what I had hoped.
Just another example of a wine shop owner/enthusiast thinking he knows all and is better than everyone else, and that we are all not worthy of their time or attention.
I love wine, love drinking it, love talking about it, and love BUYING it. I guess I'm just one customer they've lost, but if that attitude is the norm there, I gurantee I won't be the last.
Absolutely the best in the Twin Cities.
Despite what one other reviewer said, the service here is the best in the Twin Cities. At some of the other local wine shops, I've experienced atitudes ranging from "I'm too busy to be bothered by you," to "look at me, I'm a know it all wine store expert - and you're not!"
There is absolutely nothing like that at Solo Vino. If you just want to browse, go ahead. If you have general questions about what they carry - they're glad to show you around. If you're looking for something for a specific purpose or special occasion, but don't know what to get - they're more than happy to help you out.
The selection is extensive and outstanding - whether you're looking for something on the higher end, or whether you need to pay attention to your pocketbook.
The only change I'd like to see is to open more locations. The Cathedral Hill area is just a bit out of the way for me, and about the only time I can make it down there is on a Monday evening (so I'm hoping to go there today!) It is well worth the trip!
Best wine store in the Cities!. I have to completely disagree with the user who claimed he received bad service. I am poor law student who usually arrives in my modest car and jeans and T-shirt, and have received nothing but the best service every time I come. I have lived in Spain twice and have a fairly large list of my favorite Spanish wines. The owner is always VERY helpful, and he special orders my favorite Spanish wines that he otherwise does not carry whenever I ask. Further, he normally gets my orders into the shop within 3 days or so and does not charge me any fee for special ordering the bottles. I have nothing but the highest compliments for the service, selection, price, and lengths to which the staff goes to accommodate their customers.
Great service, but sometimes too busy. I love this shop. If you have time to browse it is a very friendly place to just look around and discover wines you don't find in most places. It is clean and well lit. I trust the staff with recommendations as they have tasted most of the wine there. There are times when it gets quite crowded. Or when to get help you may have to wait. This is a small store with a small staff and they like to treat customers with personal attention. When they are helping you, you are the most important person there. I do try to visit when it is less busy, if I want help.
Excellent knowledgable source for great wine!. Contrary to the last reviewer's comments, I pulled up in my dinged-up Chevy wearing dirty jeans and an old t-shirt, and the staff was incredibly kind and helpful. I needed help finding a good Spanish wine, and the lady that helped me (dont know the name, sorry) seemed to be nearly omniscient when it came to helping me select a good wine. I highly recommend Solo Vino.
A non-pretentious cornucopia of Bacchanalian delights..
Now they turn toward helping regular folks. This 1,800-square-foot shop is tastefully jammed with fine wines (there's a tiny fridge with a few beers and bottles of liquor, but why bother). The help is young but amazingly knowledgeable, and check their pretensions at the door. Although the focus is on high-end wines, there's a solid under-$10 selection. Education is a forte--besides in-store tastings, there are regular classes for the wine novice.
Waiters with Attitude. Don't expect good or even courteous service unless you pull-up in a Mercedes or some imported convertable mid-life-crisis-mobile. I had supported Solo Vino from the beginning, but of late the short shrift received at the hands of its staff is intolerable. While I live only two blocks from Solo Vino and have enjoyed many fine bottles of decently-priced wine in the past, I would gladly drive miles out of my way to shop elsewhere. I haven't been treated so rudely since my IRS audit.
come here for wine!. Tell them what you're serving for dinner; your budget; and any preferences (regions, etc.) and they'll come up with a zinger or two. My guests absolutely gushed over the Spanish wine I served - and it was less than $10 per bottle. Hah!
My Favorite Wine Store!. Very friendly service, good wine recommendations, great hours. And they will keep track of your wine purchases for you - so you can come back and get more of what you liked!
Best wine shop around. Absolutely agree with the previous review. This is hands-down the best place to buy wine. The staff actually know what they're talking about, and don't make things up just to sound smart. I've never gotten a bad recommendation from any of them. Prices are good, too.
