Editorial Review for Manny's Tortas – by Donna Tabbert Long

In Short
If your answer to the "What's on you mind?" question painted on the neon-pink wall is "food," then you've come to the right place. This late-night hangout is contemporary and cool--silver banquettes, chrome stools, molded chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out on the diverse Lake Street sidewalk scene. Spicy grilled sandwiches are made-to-order and smeared with chipotle mayo and fresh avocado slices. Homemade rice pudding or flan are good enough for any sweet tooth.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

If you don't care for a Mexican beer (several varieties) or wine (some Chilean and California vintages), get a bottle of pastel-hued Mexican soda pop that line the counter.

When you think mexican I'm sure you normally associate it with hot, spicy, cheese food served on flaming hot plates... well it is; but its much more! Mexican sandwiches are the speciality here and they certainly have done it right. The authentic flavors on a wide range of styles, meats, etc. This is the place to bring people when you hear them say that annoying "I don't like mexican; i don't like spicy."

Pros: cute dining area, good local papers, etc

Cons: Lake street parking, construction

I heard about this place from a friend and am sure glad I did. I expected it to be a traditional mexican decor but when I walked in I was totally surprised. The decor was pretty modern and just, cool. I ordered the chicken torta and it was incredible. I've never had one before and for the first time trying one I was hooked. I decided to try a dessert there also, kind of risky but I had what seemed to be a mexican carrot cake and it was some of the best I've ever had. I recommend this place to anyone looking for great lunch spot.

Pros: tortas, decor, value

Cons: nothing, nothing, parking scarce
