Editorial Review for Nami – by Donna Tabbert Long

In Short
This striking space reeks of urban sophistication, yet comfort (soft, velvety upholstered chairs) and beauty are key. The large space is divided into artful areas, enhanced with track lighting and paintings on exposed-brick walls. Fresh sushi is the star at this family-owned business. The chef's platter offers the best fish of the day, but the well-heeled clientele doesn't overlook the shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki of the perfect trio of sashimi--rich tuna, assertive mackerel and yellowtail.

We went there for my brother's birthday and I wouldn't return. The bar was horribly understaffed. My partner waiting there for 20 minutes to get our drinks as there was no table service. One poor woman appeared to be serving both the bar and restaurant. In the restaurant the waiter was inattentive and lazy - perhaps the earlier reviewer's "Aisan man" continues to wait there despite the review. Courses were slow. We had to flag him down to get dessert and coffee. When I called to complain the 13-year old sounding manager said, "Our service is usually very good. I'll have to talk to Mark about that". No offer of compensation. Even though the interior was lovely, especially the spacious bar, I have no incentive to return.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Poor service, mediocre non-sushi food.

i am consistently blown away by the creations of the 2 primary sushi chefs at Nami - Hide and Cesar. i always sit at the sushi bar and settle in for a large Kirin Ichiban beer or one of the many premium sakes offered. the happy hour specials are decent but half-priced bottles of wine on Sundays and Mondays is also a good choice. i guess i could be considered a "regular," and i am rarely let down. the service is great - i am surprised to read other reviews complaining about the staff. i think they take pride in the food and rightly so. i recommend it over Origami any day.
