Editorial Review for Redstone American Grill – by Donna Tabbert Long
In Short
Redstone is a cross between a sexy singles spot (at the huge bar) and a dining room oozing appearance-conscious couples. The lavish lodge look includes a stone fireplace, immense dried-flower arrangements and cushy booths. Most of the hearty fare gets sizzled over open flames. Artful appetizers include an aromatic flatbread topped with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. The signature chicken is sealed inside a 40-spice coat and filet mignon is slathered with blue cheese.

High marks for their attention to detail - service, food, spotless! I think Redstone (not Red Stone) is one of the most consistent restaurants in the Twin Cities - they have it figured out. I would recommend reservations if you plan to go on a weekday lunch or weekend night, they tend to get packed. Their "Seared Ahi Tunu" is one of the best appetizers in all of the food world - they sear the tuna (then chill it) and present it beautifully on a long platter with excellent sauce. Their "Lodge Cornbread" is prepared in a cast-iron skillet and brought to the table with some sort of magical maple-flavored butter - yum! They also do a really nice job with their chicken, served skin-on like from a carving station. Drinks on the patio with their mini-Bellagio water fountains is Minnesota Summer at its finest!
Pros: Great food, friendly service, spotless restaurant - everything!
Cons: (none)

The atmosphere at Redstone is the only reason we go- and we're there usually twice a month because there are so few choices out here in the 'burbs. What is it in Minnesota that there's nada for decent dining in the suburbs- other cities are not this way. Redstone has beautiful landscaping and patio. The bar is huge and cozy. The service is usually very good with some exceptions. Their Sunday brunch is wonderful. The food though- boy. The menu is so boring and so 1998 Tomato, Basil, Mozarella Pizzas, Ahi Tuna, Buffalo Shrimp-- then there's the TGI Fridays-worthy Calamari and Artichoke Spinach Dip. Main dishes feature-Steak, Chicken, Porkchops. They've narrowed their menu down more in the last couple months (in anticipation of expansion?) which made it even worse. They used to have a perfect salmon, capers, boiled egg plate that was divine with a Martini- it's gone now. The salads are boring, their sides are boring and their mashed potatoes have changed for the worse too. They never do anything seasonal- it's a winter menu year-round. Then there's the pricing-$42 for a steak? I mean seriously. You're not Mortons quality no way, no how. And I've have two occassions where it's been cooked completely wrong- an unforgivable sin for a steak place. How bout some lamb? Some game? Some unique northern regional cuisine for the masses? Check out some of menus at the fantastic places in Beavercreek, CO- copy them. With two new high-end chain steak places coming into Eden Prairie on top of Wildfire- Redstone better think quick and define itself with some unique Minnesota tastes to keep it's clientle coming back. Otherwise consider yourself a high-end Champps.
