We decided to try out the infamous "Juicy Lucys" this past weekend at the Maplewood location. Did they live up to the hype? Nope. Decent? Eh, all right. The best thing I had there were their Santa Fe burger, something my sister ordered.
The Juicy Lucys were a lot smaller than we thought, and it came on a bun that was underwhelming. The price was okay, over five bucks for just the sandwich, and you have to add a few dollars for fries.
The thing that made us decide to never go back was the service---the waitress was grumpy and unfriendly. She didn't offer any of their appetizer specials which was mentioned on the website. We had to ask about it, and the specials weren't on the menu. She was grouchy when asked to add additional condiments to the Juicy Lucy, or to make a sandwich a 'basket'. We didn't get any silverware or napkins and had to ask for them. I used to work in the food industry, and I know everyone has bad days, but she was just very unprofessional.
I tipped her well, but my husband didn't think she deserved it. There were a few of us there, but we were polite and friendly. I don't understand why we got the service we did. Maybe that's just the way she is? We never got a smile though, until we left at the end.
We still are willing to try the Juicy Lucys, but elsewhere. We won't be coming back.
Very disappointed. I used to go to 5 & 8 on a regular basis and even got take out. My son his family and I went on Sunday November 1, 2009. We ordered salad which was mostly brown and on the verge of spoiling, the brosted chicken that I went for was not near as good as it used to be. My son had the chicken strips that were so hard and over cooked he couldn't eat them. I do not think I will ever return. I have also heard this lately from several other people.
Great food, Great Staff, God Offal Regulars.
Great food. Great staff. God offal regulars!
I've been there 3 times, each visit was a lesson in how not to run a restaurant. Same group of people glued to the bar every time i was there. They were loud and rude not only to the staff, but also to the customers. I can still hear the red head's voice echoing around in my head. Thanks but there's plenty of other bars in the area that kick out putrid drunks when they get out of line, rather than turn off a song everyone is enjoying because the drunk old guy is yelling about it. And hay 5*8 those other bars also have happy hours at night, and deals during wild games!
If your near minnehaha and mcnight, keep heading east or west on minnihaha and in under 5 miles you'll have a much better time.
My favorite thing about 5-8 is their burger selection. It's not just the juicy Lucy anymore. If you don't want a burger, get yourself a "hangover" pork sandwich or a half chicken meal. There's something for everyone as long as you're ready to eat. They have TVs in the dining room, so you can catch the game or even Jeopardy. Buy some pull-tabs while you're there.
Laid-back atmosphere, decent service, inexpensive food, always family-friendly because the bar area is fully separated from the dining room.
Great Food At A Low Price!!!.
One of my friends took me to 5-8 & I was Hooked!! I take lots of people there myself.
The Burgers are good. The Jo-Jo's are better than the fries. The juicy lucy's are great. I disagree w/ the not a Date Place(Even thought I've not been on a real date for some time.)
The food is alot better than these chain resturaunts that promise your food will be hot, but don't
deliver. This place delivers on that promise.
Not a date place. We love this place with our kids. Ambience is not great (clean, but plain) food is good, prices are excellent. Watch the daily special boards for some real deals. Some of the best Juicy Lucys in town! Good cole slaw, and quick, quick service. A step above fast food. Don't drive to "the better known place" near Flying Cloud when you've got something better here!
