it used to be my favorite... – My boyfriend and I used to go to the Bulldog on average 2-3 times a week. My favorite the veggie dog, his was the Fire Dog. I raved about this place to whomever would listen. It was my FAVORITE restaurant and bar. We would go for drinks, food or both.
My opinion has changed for a variety of reasons, mainly the poor service and change in menu items.
Now, I wouldn't complain about having to wait to sit down, or the amount of time it took to get my food, even when it bordered on ridiculous. I'm not the only patron in the place and not the only one expecting service.
We went one night and ordered our food. I had my favorite, my boyfriend went out on a limb with a new sandwich after discussing it with the server. It took some time for the food to come, but we had grown to expect that. Here was the problem: the food was terrible. My veggie dog, which at that time was more like a brat, was tough and dry. I couldn't even take a bite using my teeth! I had to use a knife and fork to cut through the food and then chew so much my jaw hurt that I quit eating well before i was even halfway through. While requesting our tab I mentioned this to the server. She told me she would tell the kitchen. We sat there, uncertain what to do when she didn't return with our tab. After a while the cook came to our table and aggressively stated that I obviously don't know what a veggie dog should taste like, because "that's what they're like". I informed him that my boyfriend and myself had been customers of the Bulldog for a number of years, and I had mentioned my disappointment with the quality of the food only because I knew the quality I should have been able to expect. The solution at that point was to comp us the veggie dog and grudgingly ask if that was enough. It took some time before I was willing to return. I was disappointed to find the menu a replica of the NE Bulldog...I have not returned since. I miss my favorite place.
Bad Waitress Service – Great beer selection, if you can't get a spot at the bar then leave. Worst waitress I have had in a long time. She showed up five minutes after we sat down and asks if we would be having something to eat. When we said no, just drinks, she threw menus down and showed up 5 minute later. Sonya, our lovely waitress, talked down to you when you mispronounced the name of the beer and even corrected me when I was drinking my beer wrong. Theses things I can overlook, however when it takes 15 minutes to notice you would like another drink and then another 15 minutes to actually get the drink, well I get upset. Avoid the blond.
excellent beer selection – my boyfriend and i frequent this restaurant during weeknights. they have great food, great beer, neighborhood atmosphere, and very decent prices for the city. there is that one b*tchy waitress, but try and avoid her....short, blonde, weasel-like features.
also, the music selection (when you can hear it over the small talk) is great...sometimes they play the current! (89.3 FM)
All Signs point to YES - but my stomach said NO – Some friends and I came here and ordered simple fare - burgers, onions rings and such. The french fries looked yummy and I guessed that they had cut up their own potatoes to make them, but they were soggy and devoid of taste. The onion rings looked wonderful but the onion inside was paper-thin and tasted as if it was reconstituted. I have not had a drier burger in my life - the meat was crumbling apart. Also, the meal had "negative consequences" later.
Also, a pet peeve which you may or may not agree with - I think appetizers should be served BEFORE your main food comes, not at the same time or after. Do I have to specifically ask for this? Why do places like the bulldog send out your appetizer along with the rest of your food?
BEST cheese curds, awesome beer selection – I love this place! The cheese curds have spice inside the batter! It is the closest you can find to state fair quality. They always have a great selection of beer on tap and hard to find ones like Lindemans and tons of Belgium beers. Every burger they make they can make it vegetarian. They have awesome garlic and Cajun fries as well. The staff is friendly. It gets super busy Saturday nights, come early to get a seat.
the bulldog uptown-- horrible customer service – HORRIBLE SERVICE. i've been to the bulldog in uptown numerous of times. the last time i was there, 3 days ago, the waitress we had was not friendly at all, which is not a surprise bc whenever we have her she is always a capital B. anyway, when we first got there we had a different server, we asked that server for four waters and a moment to look over the menu. 10 plus minutes passed and still no water or sign from the waiter, finally he comes back and says there is a shift change and tells us the "b" of the waitress will be our new server. that's great a shift change, you can't get four waters within 10 minutes? whatever. throughout our time there the "b" of the waitress is not attentive and rude. time comes to pay the tab, we put cash down on the table and leave. three or so minutes pass and we are talking outside at the corner of 26th and lyndale. the waitress comes out yelling at us in front of many people to come back inside to pay our bill. we tell her we did, we left the money on the table, she says it's not there so we go back inside with the stupid idiot. when we get to the table, sure as (blank), the money we left was still on the table. the nerve of that f-ing girl. next time you accuse people of skipping out on a bill you better be right. stupid idiot! i should have literally taken the money we left and counted it out in front of her and pocketed the tip that we left for her. she does not deserve a tip, she deserves to be fired. she is always rude. i like their food/menu, but unfortunately their poor customer service trumps that. SCREW the bulldog, there are other places in mpls that have great service and food.
my advice: go anywhere else ie) cc club, herkimer, psycho suzi's, independent, uptown bar, etc.
TRULY THE BEST FRIES IN TOWN!! – This was a special weekend where my wife and I were just hanging out; no kids and trying to find some fun things to do. Believe me, we don't get to do this very often. When we want something to eat it's easy to default to the typical "corporate" franchise locations and we hate doing that but at least you know what you're getting. My wife actually found this on a "best of" list because their french fries were mentioned. And by the way, my wife goes to the State Fair (which I can't stand) just for the fresh cut fries. So we had to try Bulldog. All I can say is that our expectations were completely over exceeded. If you want the corporate food, don't go to Bulldog. If you want great tasting food and fantasic beer then you NEED to go to Bulldgog. Get over the lack of the franchise look and feel, and the servers aren't wearing their FLAIR, in fact they're probably tatted up a little. Our server Blake fit that description and he was awesome, and according to his words a "professional beer drinker" which made his beer recommendations that much more credible. They have over 30 beers on tap so you need the help of an expert. Suffice it to say, the beer was amazing and fresh. And speaking of wait staff, we went to Big Bowl corporate joint later that night and our server there couldn't carry Blake's note pad. As for the food, we both had burgers and they took a little while but when you're enjoying a fresh pint of anything with your loved one who's counting the clock, unless you're waiting for your little remote buzzer to flash at some other place! When they arrived and we got to taste, then I knew why they took a while. This was one of the best burgers we've had in a LONG time. They were fresh and obvioulsy made with great care. As for the fries? Well I might be able to avoid the fair because now I know where I can get the best french fries in town any time!
Breaks the mold and then some – The Bulldog desserves a better average than 7.8 , and that is mosly the point of this review. Yeah, I can see where both negative reviews are coming from, and as a ten year veteran in the biz I am probably biased. But still, just cause you had a lousy time doesn't give you the right to trash the place and potentially turn away first timers and out of towners.
No one who has gone there more than twice will disagree. Unless of course the bouncers had to throw you out for being a bafoon or the serves just knew you were an a+hole from the start. Come on, if you can't handle a little attitude in Uptown, then go back to the suburbs and wear your sweat shop Abercrombie and white caps someplace else. Just cause you're too afraid to go to the CC club doesn't mean your B.S. will fly here either.
On a nicer note there are plenty of nice peaceful folks who may on occasion wear the AF and do in fact enjoy sports who don't mind drinking with a majority of people who can sing along with most Green Day albums. The crowd is perhaps the most unpretentious (doesn't take much in ol Uptown, but still) and generally amiable in the hood. Sure it's a bit smoky and greasy but the staff is awesome and the food is good. The beer is probably the best in town, and the Juke Box kicks bass. The Bulldog provides an atmosphere for us locals that was missing in Minneapolis before Matt opened the place. It's always busy on Friday and Saturday, and the rest of the week is never boring. Come and see for yourself.
Awsome beer selection and great service – This is one of my favorite hangout spots in Minneapolis. They have a fabulous beer selection, and the bartenders are cool about letting you have a sample before you buy one. Good "bar & grill" food. Their wait staff is usually very good. It isn't a very big place, so it CAN get really crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, so at that point the service isn't as quick as it usually is. But on weeknights it's just a great low-key hangout spot. Free street parking is nice! Whether you like dark beer or PBR, this place will have beer you like!!
Great beer, but smelled like a moldy basement. – This bar has the best beer selection of its size in the Twin Cities. If you like a good Belgian beer, you should give it a try. The menu is strictly burgers and hotdogs. The big minus is that the restaurant smelled terrible, like a flooded basement. We'd have gone out to the patio for some fresh air seating, but like most Minneapolis restaurants, the smokers had taken over. Service was merely okay, and it was too noisy. I'd have rated it below average, but the beer selection makes it worth checking out.
