Bright colors and comfortable furniture give this chain cafe a laid-back feel, with scattered tables that beckon coffee-sipping readers, chatters and diners. All baked goods--bagels, muffins, two dozen kinds of bread--are made fresh on the premises. Sandwiches include turkey-artichoke panini and Asiago roast beef, plus standards like chicken salad and smoked turkey. Soups change daily, but popular choices like broccoli and cheese, chicken noodle and French onion are always on the menu.

Great salads, OK soup. I'm consistently happy with Panera's salads -- fresh greens and great dressings. The soups have been OK, but nothing spectacular. The you-pick-two deal is a great way to try things: half a sandwich, soup, or half a salad, pick two, $6.

This particular one never seems busy when we've gone, which is surprising. Loads of free parking in the Grand & Excelsior ramps, and it's cozy (some booths, a fireplace), with excellent free Wi-fi.
