Surabhi- good food but owner's attitude to customers is poor.
We visit this restaurant so often, the food is good.
Two bad things about this place: 1) the price for the buffet varies each time we go there: suggestion would be to put the cost of the buffet somewhere where people would see. 2) the second thing is the owner's attitude: she rarely smiles and when she does it seems like it costs her money to smile, as a customer I think smiling and thanking the customers is good for the business, and we go there at least once a month (I understand we all have bad days and sometimes we do not want to smile) a suggestion to the owner is that there are tons of Indian restaurants in Minneapolis and its growing everyday and if you would like your customers to keep coming back and recommend your restaurant you should be more customer conscious, even if your food is good.
Bad service, mediocre food.
Service is almost none existent. I went there for lunch and dinner few times each. There will be a pitcher of water on your table, who knows how long it's been sitting there. The waiter will bring empty glasses and you must pour yourself, because he walks away immediately.
During lunch time, not that busy still they have hard time clearing your empty plates, instead all the staff prefer folding napkins as if they were all waiting for each other to do it. One time me and my co-worker just took the plates and put it on th next empty table, because our table was getting crowded.
Places like this go out of business soon, if they keep it like this, and hopefully a better place will open in it's place.
Here's the deal.... We've been coming here since before the relocation. The reviews I've read made me realize I need to set a few things straight. The service here is not like other restaurants. This does not mean it is bad. They will never make you feel unwelcome unless you are a jerk and need to be treated that way or you can't appreciate delicious food when you have it. They have always been kind and accommodating, even remembering our names and what we like and don't like. This is essentially home-cooked food. It will not be exactly the same every time but it will be consistent. If you don't like the service then just order take out and go to Winestreet and buy some delicous IPA beer to compliment your meal. If you don't like this place, fine, don't come, we won't have to wait so long for a table then!
Great food, bad service. As the number of places to get authentic south Indian food decrease in the Minneapolis area we turn to Surabhi time and time again. Always the food is very flavorful and extremely tasty (although we only order vegetarian fare so we cannot speak to the meat dishes). We constantly endure the service and as regulars we are fairly used to it. Our recommendation is to order everything at once and make sure you don't forget anything.
Really Bad Service!. We have been to this place more than once. The first time, we were a little taken aback at the uncommunicative waiter and shabby service. The food was decent and we thought maybe the waiter was having a bad day.We didn't realize that's how the employees at this place behave regularly! So we tried it again after a few months. I really wish we hadn't! In all fairness, the food was okay! It was not the best, it was not the worst I've had either. But the service was worse the second time. The entire staff has a distinctly unfriendly attitude. The employees don't care about customer satisfaction at all. Our waiter did not know anything about the items on the menu. He went in to ask someone else, when we asked him about 1 of the dishes , came back without any more information and a wooden expression. After dinner, we asked for boxes. He came back with a box and with a surly expression and said "Next time, don't ask us for boxes ". I have not been to restaurant where asking for a box for left overs got that response! It's a shame, the restaurant definitely needs new management ! Indian hospitality is a big part of our food and culture, this place lets you down, big time!
Unfriendly and distant. Went for lunch. There is no service. One young lady that was folding napkins, spoke on her cell phone for our entire meal. Also the food at the buffet was just slightly warm. We told the other server that the food wasn't warm enough - he didn't understand English well. Finally he went to the kitchen - and came back with the excuse that it's supposed to be like that.
Things have changed.
I remember going to surabhi in 2005 and it was amazing HOWEVER keep in mind things have changed. I've seen a change in the whole staff and management(perhaps they changed management?)
This has really been a terrible change. Food is horrible now, and the staff is almost downright silly. The waiters walk around in sweat pants, one has to wait for an awful long time for any sort of service.
And the food, I don't even want to start, it used to be the best south indian food in town, now you'll be thankful that you had a warm naan. Terrible staff, terrible food, just good memories of the old Surabhi.
Someone needs to check the reviews once more and perhaps analyze the dates they were written on. Since the mgmt change, one will see a clear pattern.
Eat at a taco bell rather than this place please.
Bad Service. I've eaten at Surabhi several times because it's close to where I live. However, the food isn't that great and the service is even worse. I finally got fed up with the staff and decided not to give this restaurant my business anymore. I've never before walked into a restaurant and had the staff look so annoyed to see me (a paying customer!) I thought maybe they were just having a bad day that day, but it happened everytime. One evening I was even turned away at the door when I tried to go in at 9:20 (and they close at 10:00). That was the last time I went there. They obviously don't need or want my business.
Good and Bad...mostly Bad.
We have eaten from Surabhi quite a few times because it is so convenient to us. After getting appalling service the first couple of times, at both old and new locations, we started taking out.
Although they provide a lot of sides with the Thali meal this does not translate to take out, so many things were missing that I felt jipped. Some dishes can be really tasty one meal and nasty the next.
The last time I had take out from Surabhi they were filling up the sides from buckets on the lunch buffet, this was at dinner time. Because of this I have serious cleanliness and freshness concerns and won't go back any more.
I don't want to get sick on the chance that I may have a really nice dish. Too bad since they could have made the most of their new location, kept it clean and had good service.
NO - GO indian restaurant. How to start my review for this NO - GO indian restaurant? Nothing is good inside. You have to wait for atleast 30 minutes after you place the order. But if you go after 9:30 pm (they close at 10:00 pm), they serve with a smile , but your food will be half baked. The Oil which they use should be scrutinized. Either it is briyani or dosa, they have the talent of serving it half baked. I would say, please get a doc appointment and then enter SURABHI.....
