Sometimes great, sometimes not – When the Independent is busy it is super busy and a great time. But when it's slow, it is super slow. The food isn't half bad and the martinis are delicous! Definitely worth a shot!!
A stylish Asian-influenced eatery where the flirtation possibilities are endless. – In Short
The Independent has the look of a comfortable, stylish neighborhood bar, with groups of friends and couples watching flat-screen TVs. Artwork ranges from Vargas-style pinup girls to art-school paintings of tortured blondes. Open the menu--and flip past several pages of sexy martini concoctions--and you'll find Asian-influenced bistro cuisine. The seafood-heavy listings feature wasabi shrimp cocktails, panko-crusted ahi and halibut with mango sauce and creamy mashed potatoes. For dessert, there's spiced pumpkin cheesecake or mud pie.
Hard to beat late night. – Their late night happy hour is impossible to beat with their large appetizers for only 5 dollars. Also, along with their appetizers, they do have some good drink specials, such as Sunday night where more expensive booze is cheap. So yeah, this and Chino have a good battle going in uptown, except we tend to go for Independent food, can't be beat. Never had bad service also, we know they are busy and we don't like to be hounded. So, I love this place, what can I say?
Love happy hour! – They have a fantastic happy hour- checkout their web site (even without happy hour they still have good prices beers start at $3.50 - not bad for Uptown). The food is also wonderful- creative and reasonably priced. I have been here to eat a few times now, and have always received good service. Their late night life is also fun- a full bar and fun people.

Excellent food I will never return for... – I want to start off by saying that the food was excellent - creative, fun, well prepared menu ideas - hats off to the chef...Unfortuanatly the service was so horrible, I will never return!
It started of with the server saying hi, we replied with a hi, and they he just stood there...after a few seconds he said "do you want something?" Wow, what a first impression! My wife and I ordered an appetizer - a great sounding cheese plate, I had the fillet, she had the eggplant. 30 minutes later after I plugged the meter again, no appetizer, no refils, no server. Our entrees came out - my steak was prepared wrong, but I can live with that. My wifes eggplant was fantastic. After we were into our entrees, the appetizer finally arrived. I asked for steak sauce, twice, and still did not get any, until the server returned a third time, at this point I was mostly done. I had to find our server (at the host stand chatting) to ask for the bill. I was scorned upon for interrupting his conversation with the host. The poor service was one thing, he was plain outright rude. This person had no business being in the hospitality industry. How unfortunate for a great chef to work in such a service poor environment. I can tell by previous reviews now that this is the norm, not just an ocassional thing here.
FOLLOW-UP to above: I sent a message to the management about our poor service. It has been a week and still no response. I will keep you posted!
Another FOLLOW-UP: Well, we decided to go back and try it. Of course the food was wonderful. The service on our second visit was also excellent! I had a cahnce to talk to Mark (manger) and introduce myself. He did apologize for the poor service from before and told me that the server issue we had was "eliminated." I am now back to square one with The Independent, and look forward to the next time we go. I will keep you posted.
BORING ... not horrible – It is ok - not the best use of dinner money...the wait staff are kind of in your face without being that helpful. The menu is just boring - they need to incorporate more choices ... I kind of miss the Smiling moose...I know that was kind of a goofy place too..but at least the food was good.
A Great Happy Hour – Loved the decor and the Wednesday night ambiance DJ ... yes, the service was slow, but the place was also jam-packed. Great food and decent prices (not to mention the happy hour that runs till 9pm on Wednesdays!). If you love a good happy hour menu and a place that is fun and funky, give it a try!
Not the greatest – Just didn't meet my expectations...service was slow, especially for lunch when I have only an hour to get back to work. I asked to talk to a manager, I was told she would be right out and she never showed up. Are you kidding? The food was good, although I question what took so long as it wasn't busy at all. Overall, just not very impressive.
Less than "classy" – I tried the Independent on a Saturday night a short while ago on a recommendation from a friend that this place was trying to bring a "Classy" lounge establishment into Uptown. What I found was an below-average place trying to be a ghetto-trash club. The DJ was spinning gangster rap laced with F-bombs every other word. Nice dinner ambiance. As I screamed to be heard by my date on the other side of the table, a raucous squable at a neighboring table turned into a violent brawl which had to be broken up by the bar staff and a by-stander as security was non-existent. Thank goodness for the smoking ban - the adjoining "Smoke Room" provided just enough of a smoke waft to prove annoying. Service was okay, but not great. All-in-all, a bad experience.
