Ate here for a college project. My friend and I arrived at Singapore early. The opening time was 5pm. Nobody was even in inside. I called the restaurant. The lady said she was running late. I said I was cold. She said go wait in your car until I come. I just hung up on her. Then it was 15 minutes after 5pm. I called her again and asked are you on your way? She said I'm almost there. So finally at 5:20pm she finally arrived to open her restaurant. Her excuse for being late was that she was out shopping with her kids. So whatever! I really loved the food there. My friend said her egg roll was cold, but it was great! This lady was the owner. She's very cheap she doesn't hire anyone else to help. She's the cook, server, busser, and whatever else! I didn't leave a tip! She never really offered any discount or anything else for being late. I won't go back! Like I said the food was great! But she was late!
Phenomenal Food!. This is hands-down the best place for curry in the Twin Cities. My wife and I visited on a cold winter night, and just as frostbite was about to set in, I got scorched (in a good way) by the spicy Captain Curry which was absolutely incredible. The combination of spices that were used was one of the best I've ever had, and definitely topped anything that I've tried in the area. The restaurant doesn't spend much on decoration, and overall the atmosphere could use some improvement. There was no music and not much visual stimulation on the walls. But the food makes up for it. The "backwoods" location in south Minneapolis probably makes this place stay a secret as it dwells in an ocean of residential properties, but can't imagine that the tasty food will keep this place off the map for too long.
Fantastic restaurant - amazing food, unique flavors. I usually don’t spend the time to write reviews but Singapore is an amazing restaurant and I wanted to get the word out there. I get Asian take-out every day and have tried dozens of different restaurants, mostly authentic, around the Twin Cities. Singapore is definitely one of my top three for many reasons. All around, the food is incredibly good. The spices are by far the best in the Cities. The food is very fresh and top quality. It’s very authentic. Not to mention almost everything on the menu is unique and something you can’t get from any other restaurant. The flavors are complex, interesting, and really really good. The cook is incredibly friendly and a great pleasure to talk to. She knows me by name and knows what flavors I like the best. I always chat with the cook when I go to get take-out. The decor is unique, an enjoyable place to dine. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food you get. It’s surprising that the restaurant is not more well-known but once the word gets out I’m sure this will be a favorite of anybody who likes authentic Asian food.
Long Wait. I ordered food from here twice. Both times the delivery man was MIA. They didn't know where he was even though they advertise free delivery. The wait for the food was rediculous, almost 40 minutes. And then after waiting for so long the dumplings and curry rolls were completely burnt. The food was good but the service was horrible even though the lady who owns the place and cooks the food was very nice.
Need to go back, ASAP.
I went here about a week ago for take out. I had received a $5 off coupon in the mail and thought I'd give it a try. My first impression was a little strange. The women who owns it is also the chef and she was in the kitchen when I arrived so I had to peak my head in the kitchen to get her attention so she would come out for me to order. There was no one else eating in the restaurant at the time, not that that would stop me from eating there in the future.
But the food, oh the food. I was really blown away. The captain's curry was amazing. The description says it has like 27 spices and they all mixed together perfectly for this wonderful dish. The owner suggested a few other dishes, as well, but said the captain's curry was probably the most popular. She also suggested a few other spicy "stir-fry" dishes that I'm excited to try, as well.
On my way out the door, she handed me my food and said that she gave me extra rice so that I have enough for leftovers which was good because the curry was enough for 2 meals.
Overall, I can't wait to go back.
Great spot, still a secret, enjoy it while it lasts!.
I have been to this place several times and every time I go the same friendly lady is always there to help. It turns out; she is the owner, top chef and usually the server! She could not be more welcoming and she is willing to make any dish you order to your exact specifications! It is a fusion style cooking, by her own admission, and the resulting dishes are fabulous. I have yet to eat a meal I did not thoroughly enjoy.
The restaurant is a little hard to find, it is in the middle of a neighborhood and is a little dark, but I think this just adds to the charm of this place. It kind of feels like going to a friendly neighbor?s house and having her cook you a wonderful meal that?s been in her family for generations. I don?t want to rave to much, the place does have problems. First, because the same lady does all the serving and cooking, it can take a while to get your order. Second, there is no alcohol served. This was kind of a bummer until I found out that it is perfectly ok to bring you own, the restaurant will even provide glasses for you!
Its a little bothersome that the last few times I have gone, it has been nearly empty, please do yourself a favor and try this wonderful restaurant. You will discover a dining experience that few people know about, and help patron a local business that definitely deserves your support.
OMG Delicious. My boyfriend and I decided to take a risk and go to a new place. Based on the other reviews and the proximity of the restaurant we walked over last night. We ordered the potstickers, the captains curry and the Singapore fried rice noodles. We were pleasantly surprised at the flavors in the potstickers, they were really good. Little smoky like they had been grilled and the sauce was delicious tangy and spicy. The captain's curry, hands down was the best I have ever had. So much flavor. It was a buttery, coconut milky, spicy party in my mouth. The fried rice noodles were very good too. We were the only ones in the restaurant, it was 6 pm on a Sunday. That can be expected. Portions were right, price was good too, service was great. Ambiance is acceptable, low frills on the decor, but the food more than makes up for it. I said, "MMMM" at the first bite and was very happy by the time we left. I hope i don't get addicted.
the best curries in town, or anywhere else!.
The "Captain's Curry" is quite simply the best curry I have had ANYWHERE, from any style of cuisine. And everything else on the menu is breathtaking as well. Singapore originally opened as a sister restaurant to the incredible Singapore Chinese Cuisine in Maplewood. It was good, but not as good as the original. But we went occasionally anyway because it's in the neighborhood rather than the long drive from Minneapolis.
A couple of months ago, I went to Maplewood and found Singapore Chinese Cuisine had closed, and was quite saddened. So tonight, my wife and I went to Singapore, to at least get a decent curry. We were THRILLED to find that the old Singapore Chinese Cuisine owners had taken over the south Minneapolis location! Everything that we loved at the old restaurant is now a convenient bike trip from our house!
Again, I repeat - I have never had better curries ANYWHERE. The ingredients are spotlessly fresh, the flavors so multilayered and complex you can't begin to figure out how they're done, and you get things exactly as spicy as you ask for (unlike a few Thai curry places I could name). It almost makes me weep to think of the crowds packing generic crowd-pleasers like PF Changs or Big Bowl when we have an utterly unique masterpiece right here in south Minneapolis!
great Asian fusion cuisine, very fresh.
This place has a new telephone number: (612) 722-2050.
We just moved to the Nokomis neighborhood, and we've driven by Singapore several times. The exterior does not look very inviting, but we decided to give the place a chance.
The owner is re-starting the business and trying to get things up and running again. So, things are a little in transition as far as remodeling goes.
The food, however, was EXCELLENT. The ingredients are very fresh--all purchased from local farmers markets. There is no processed or canned food used in the cooking (my wife is very picky about this and asked about it).
Particularly good were the curries and the noodle dishes. The flavors were popping, and the owner prepared the spiciness to exactly our request.
We're really glad we gave this little restaurant a try, because we've been looking for some high quality take-out/sit-down Asian fusion cuisine for a long time. We're going to become regulars for sure.
What's even better is that the prices are very reasonable.
Best rice noodles in the city!.
Reopened! We tried it under the last two owners/chefs and, with the new ownership, the dishes now created are reminiscent of '04-'05. The rice noodles, once recognized as "Best in the Twin Cities" are better than ever. Also, you can order them to taste with different levels of spiciness. In each order, you get at least two meals. Great value.
The decor leaves a little something to be desired but is simple and pleasant. The service is friendly and the location is convenient, just north of the crosstown. Enjoy!
