Editorial Review for Level 5 – by Donna Tabbert Long

In Short
Casual and cozy, this lounge-y space is located between the Guthrie's two stages on the fifth floor. While accenting the same seasonal bounty as the main level's Cue, its lower prices and smaller plates attract the more budget-conscious--from twentysomethings to empty nesters. Pretheater offerings include a seared pork tenderloin with plum catsup for those who want a meal; sweet lovers may opt simply for coffee and dessert at intermission instead.

I was apprehensive to try Level 5 after reading the former review; however I had no such experience. While visiting Minnesota for the first time we wanted to take in some theater at the historic Guthrie. Some friends from the cities recommended dining in the theater. We dined at level 5 and were pleasantly pleased with our time and experience spent there. The hosts were friendly and charismatic, we were sat immediately even though we only had 45 minutes before the show, I hate to bash heads, but I do believe that this restaurant was very efficient, the servers were very nice (all of them females) and all around a great place to dine. The food was great, and we had just enough time to relax and have a drink before heading off to our seats for the show... I was also pleasantly surprised to see the manager stop by and introduce him self and actually be sincere about it. He was very informative and gave us a quick lesson about the Guthrie and the restaurants food philosophy. I was very impressed with his company’s (Bon Appetit) outlook on sustainable food. I wish that more restaurants would follow their lead. I would recommend Level 5 without any reservations Id have to say that being a New York theater patron, this facility and dining experience rivaled some of the best we have in New York.

Pros: friendliness

Cons: parking

Worst dining service experience ever. My husband and I showed up at 5:45 for a pre-show dinner (show was at 7:30). There were approx. 15 people in the restaurant at the time. We waited 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we were there. We ordered an appetizer and two price-fixed meals which includes salad, entree and dessert. At 7:00 we hadn't been served our entree yet (once again, show was at 7:30), when the manager came over and said that they'd run out of one of our entrees. Between 5:45 and 7:00 the place had filled up and we'd seen several plates of the entree we'd ordered come out of the kitchen and go to people that had shown up and ordered long after we had. In frustration, we left and decided to go down to Cue and have a quick appetizer before the show. We sat in Cue's bar for another 5 minutes without being served. A wait staff member acknowledged our presence but never came back. We left in frustration once again. This time we went up to one of the bars on the theater level hoping to grab a quick small plate to share. Once again the bartender acknowledged our presence then continued to run receipts at the cash register for another 5 minutes without serving us. The reason I mention this is because Level 5, Cue and the bars are owned and operated by the same company. The waitress at Level 5 did comp our drinks, appetizer and salad that we'd been served even though we offered to pay, but she was not apologetic in any way. It was just a bad experience all the way around and I wouldn't recommend Level 5 to anyone. I can't imagine that our bad experience is some sort of anomaly either. If it happened to us, I would guess it's happened to others.

Pros: None

Cons: Service
