Tips for Jon Charles Salon

Inexperienced in Japanese Hair Straightening. If you are thinking of getting your hair straightened and are looking specifically at Japanese hair straightening (also known as thermal reconditioning), I would recommend that you avoid the Jon Charles Salon (in Uptown or Wayzata).

I had the Japanese hair straightening done when I was living out in NYC and loved the benefits I got from it. The results were great and my hair was perfectly straight even with just air drying it (saving me so much time in my routine). The results are permanent which is great! I was looking for a place in Minneapolis/St. Paul that offered this service for my mom who had naturally coarse hair like mine. I learned about the Jon Charles Salon from my grad school classmate so I brought my mom there for consultation. In speaking with Jon and his team, they claimed that they were very experienced and promised us great results. After spending 5 hours in the salon and paying over $600 for the process we were told to wait a week to wash the hair (I only had to wait 2 days). Only to find out that the results were not permanent and her hair just looks fried. We called and they told her to come in again and they would fix it. After a few more hours in the salon she left a second time. It’s been a couple of weeks since the second service and her hair looks more damaged than what she walked in with. She’s tried calling the salon but now her calls are being ignored and Jon has been “in meetings” or “with client” and has not returned any calls (i.e. no accountability).

So in short, the Jon Charles Salon does not meet their claims of being experienced in Japanese Hair Straightening. They may be good at other services they are providing, but they clearly fall short on this process that they charge $600 for! I am now planning on taking my mom to NYC to get her hair fixed and I would suggest you spend your money elsewhere.

Get what you pay for.. Went here for a manicure/pedicure and was not impressed. First impression was that the reception was wearing a dress that barely covered her bottom, and I could see my nail tech's bra (and more) throughout the entire service. The owner's son (probably about 7-10 years old) was running around the salon, and kept poking his head in during my pedicure. Plus, the placement of the pedicure chairs (which don't have massage options) was such that staff were always walking by. When I moved to the front for my manicure, it became VERY clear that my nail tech was not experienced. She didn't know where any materials were at the station, and frequently had to get up to look for things. Her foot also bumped my just-pedicured foot underneath the table, which ruined one of the toes (though she did re-do it). While I was in the front of the salon getting the manicure, the owner and staff ordered Jimmy John's sandwiches, which the owner's son then ate at a hair station not far from me - I thought that was pretty unprofessional. The worst part, though, was that I was left without a goodbye from my nail tech with my nails wet as she moved on to her next hair client. (I wasn't offered a nail dryer like most places, though I think I saw one underneath the other manicure station.) Though the receptionist was helpful with my credit card, she didn't seem to care about the nail tech's tip. When I asked if I could have it added to the card total, she said I'd have to write a check or use their ATM for a cash gratuity - very inconvenient. Also, I didn't appreciate the receptionist asking me if I wanted my hair styled before I left - too much add-on selling trying to go on! All in all, I tried this spot out because it was a bit cheaper than the salon I normally go to for mani/pedis. I would rather pay a bit more and have a professional service. Guess you get what you pay for.

The one pro is the Sunday hours, and parking is pretty easy in the lot behind the salon. Would not recommend.

Jon Charles is great!. Just got my hair foiled by Jon Charles himself. I am thrilled with the results. I came in asking for a highlight, something appropriate for spring and the color is perfect. It was what I had in mind, but couldn't fully articulate. It definitely brightens up my look. I love a colorist that can also provide guidance and give opinions. He was quick and made it look easy. They also dried and styled my hair for free! I've been to other salons where they have you dry your own hair. Hate that - especially considering how much you pay. I was even offered a free manicure while I was waiting. This is a full service salon. The cost of the foil was even less than what I pay downtown. I was expecting to pay quite a bit for having Jon Charles color my hair. I was pleasantly surprised. The feel of the salon is modern, but not too trendy. I am a business professional and did not feel I was out of my element. I highly recommend this salon. I plan on getting my hair cut there next. I hope the results are as great.

Kudos! Bravo!. Bravo to Jon Charles Salon for making my first visit absolutely splendid, so wonderful, that I just had to write about.

This was the first time that I left salon and didn't want to immediately run home to wash my hair only to re-style it. (Ladies, you know exactly what I am talking about - we've all done at one time or another.)

I've been to many other "notable" Uptown / Mpls / Metro salons, however in my opinion, Jon Charles took the cake in providing me with the personalized attention and care needed to my hot mess of hair.

The atmosphere was hip (but not trying to be "too hip"), easy-going, professional and but most of all unpretentious. It was quite obvious the staff was enjoying what they do best and was genuinely enthusiastic about being there.

My first visit included a full foil with Jon Charles. Simply stated, his talent is undeniable. I don't know what else to say. I can finally be confident in my blonde-li-ness, not bleached, not white, not yellow, but a rich, skin-tone/feature appropriate blonde. (Yesssssss......)

After Jon, I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan who would be cutting and styling, my again, hot mess of a 'do. He's talented, funny, engaging, and dare I repeat myself, truly talented. As with Jon Charles, my cut was personalized - and for the first time ever, my boyfriend gasped in sheer love of my cut/style. Like I mentioned before, I've been to many other "notable" salons, but *never* before have a had blowout such as the one I experienced.

Needless to say, I will be returning.

FYI, BTW: For gratuity, the salon only accepts cash, which is placed into evelopes for each stylist/colorist (Just be prepared if you are receiving services from more than one person - do da maff.)

FYI, BTW: Yah, the parking is so-so, but it's Uptown, so deal with it. There is a pay lot behind the salon, with my total for approx 3 hours was $5. Otherwise there are meters in front of the salon up for grabs.

Best hair in all life. I finally found the people that make my hair look amazing. I went to Cheryl for the best cut I have ever had and Stori for the perfect color. They also had a blowdry bootcamp to teach me how to have the look of a real

blowout at home . I have never felt that I have looked this good in my life, except for mabey when I was seveteen.

Not What I Had Hoped. I heard about Jon Charles' Salon in a Mpls publication, and believed every word of Jon's passion for personlizing hair-cuts to the person and making my hair scream.

My stylist did not ask me if I wanted my hair to scream - and she was completely devoid of personality.

I brought two relatively different photos in - asking for pieces of each of the styles. I specifically said that I did not want a "bob," to which the stylist replied, "I think we should do the bob, because I think that's cute."

I should have left.

Not only was I treated pretty poorly by my stylist, but I obviously did not get the cut I was looking for, rather the cut my stylist was looking for.

Technically, there's nothing wrong with my hair - but I will sadly never go back to this salon.

I had high hopes - I like Jon's vision. Unfortunately, the staff doesn't seem to share the same passion. At least not the stylist I saw.

Fabulous Service, Professional & Experienced Staff, Fun Environment!. I always look forward to my appointments at Jon Charles Salon...from the time you walk in until the time you are leaving, you feel somewhat like a celebrity or at the very least, an extremely important client. Besides the friendly service and great attention, every staff member is experienced and at the top of their game. My experience has specifically been with Cheryl (haircut) and Jon Charles (color)...both are masters at their trade and take great pride and passion in their work. They give honest and constructive input about your hair and make you feel like you are in the hands of experts. I always leave happy with my hair and feeling great. I have noticed looking around at the other clients in the salon...they are also having fun and seem happy with their service. The salon provides other services also such as facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures. I have yet to try those services but I plan on it. They also carry top of the line products such as Kerastase, Bumble&Bumble and Eminence Organics. I can highly recommend this salon because I have tried many in the Twin Cities with many disappointments but Jon Charles Salon never lets me down!

What you see is not what you get. This salon is ultra trendy with a cool decor. The staff is friendly. You start out with a feeling that this place will work. I got a fantastic consult but then my cut left me dissapointed. I asked for texturizing and got none. I had to have it redone a week later. And my color was a little too red and didn't take so well. If you're looking for a great haircut that works and falls into place, it's probably not here.
