Citysearch Editorial Review. Light fixtures hang down like glowing stalactites at this warm and cozy Southwest Minneapolis restaurant, named after Maude Armatage, also the neighborhood’s namesake. Booths wrapped in rich reds and sunset-colored fabrics add extra warmth to the small dining area, which is anchored by dark wood and buoyed by artful fixtures and exposed brick. A bar hosts wine lovers and fans of Maude’s unique bistro small plates, like sautéed duck breast and grilled flatbreads. The vibe is relaxed and simple, but the food is anything but.
Great food, great music. I've been to maude quite a few times and I always have such a wonderful time. I love coming here and getting the cheese plate and a bottle of wine with my girlfriend. Many romantic and memorable moments here. Props on the music.

This was a cool little restaurant. I really dug the atmosphere and the menu was inventive and fresh.
The hanger steak was good and the burger was really tasty as well.
The service was quick and to the point. Which is good by me. I don't like to be doted over. It's nice to get what you want and enjoy your company rather than your wait staff.

I am never compelled to publish reviews, but after reading the other reviews for Cafe Maude, I feel it necessary to stand up for my new favorite restaurant. After losing our neighborhood favorite, Pane Vino Dolce, my husband and I were a bit at a loss for that great place to which we could walk on a Tuesday or Saturday or whichever night and get a gourmet meal at a relatively reasonable price. Finally we have found it at Cafe Maude! Neither of us has ever been disappointed in any of our choices from the menu, at brunch or at dinner. We can't necessarily afford to be "regulars" in this economy, but it has become a place we recommend when meeting friends and family. In fact, I requested that we celebarte my recent birthday there. The wine and cocktail selection is brilliant and the sauces that accompany the various dishes are to die for. I enjoy happy hour at "Maude's", even with friends who don't drink. Their selection of non-alcoholic cocktails is extensive and enticing, even to the martini lovers.
I would caution that a reservation is helpful, even is it's made earlier the same day. It seems to be a popular place.
In short, give Cafe Maude a try. I think it's amazing.
I don?t like reviewing restaurants when they first open because everyone is on their best behavior. Cafe Maude is a perfect example. IF you have money to throw to the wind, a hankering for salt, and you?re on a diet, Cafe Maude is for you. Their food represents a whole new level of minimalism ? even the bread was minimalist. Let?s begin:
$12, 3 slices of tuna not much larger or thicker than a quarter on what seemed to be melba toast: Ok, so we thought maybe this is a starter?..so we moved to the salad that we heard so much about??
$12, Crab ? Endive Salad with a piece of crab not much larger than 2?x1?x1? and 4 tiny leaves of lettuce, couldn?t find the asparagus: My friend asked to substitute apple for the asparagus and was told later by the waitress that they could not do it because the salads are premade. As I said, we could not find asparagus on the salads?.At this point we were both starving so we asked the waitress what the largest portion was on the menu. She stated the pork or beef. Hmm, we thought, that?ll be a little heavy at this point and the waitress recommended the scallops. When asked how many were on the plate she said 4 or 5 on top of pasta. Well, then, that sounded perfect.
$22, 3 black scallops the diameter of a quarter and perhaps a half, maybe ?? inch thick with 1/3 cup of pasta in a watery sauce with no flavor except salt (You would do much better at Palomino where the scallops are perfect.) The waitress checked in with me when the dish arrived and I asked, what part of 4 or 5 on top of pasta does this represent? She offered to bring me another scallop. I accepted. The additional scallop tasted nothing like the other three.
Needless to say your caloric intake is drawn from the evening ambiance and music and not from the food. $84 tab and still hungry. Also, the presentation was boring to say the least ? everything blended into the plate. There was no originality whatsoever, every dish was in a pyramid format.
Only 3 reviews? Very fishy.. For the price and pretense, the food should be much better. Truth is, this isn't a restaurant as much as it is a den of douche-ery. The d-bags are everywhere in this place. It's where the edina and south minneapolis rub on tan set go to drink martinis while listening to 1) A too loud swing band or 2) Another cliche American Apparel-clad DJ dorking out with a laptop and probably wondering where he left his razor. Seriously, either be a restaurant or be a nightclub. Better yet, just admit that you don't care about the food and really just want to make some $ on apps and cocktails. The food might not make you sick, but everything else will.
Yum!!. I had a great experience at Cafe Maude! I went for a late dinner on a recent Sunday night and was very impressed. The cute and cozy atmosphere and eclectic menu make this spot perfect for almost any occasion. The menu presents lots of options and is a type of 'new takes on classics/comfort food'. I loved everything I tasted and the presentation and portions were thoughtful. I'm still craving thier beef carpaccio!! You have to check out their super creative cocktails and beverages! Their apple martini is garnished with a scratch-off lottery ticket!!
A Nice Neighborhood location. The rare and unusual magazine selection that greets you before you enter the cafe is interesting, and after eating the reason is obvious. Reviewers on Maude's website promised fresh smells, we didn't smell any good or bad. The Roasted Butternut Squash soup arrived in a large scooped dish with very little soup, a totally bland flavor, and pricey. The Settergren which is 2 eggs, potatoes, bacon and toast (no jams or jelly) was also bland, a bit over-cooked, and so little it left you hungry. An order of toast consisted of three small wedges of hard slightly toasted slices of about two bites each. Our order was finally taken in haste and delivered with a lack luster flair making us wonder, "Do they really want us to come back?" I will give them credit for a clean and cozy bathroom, with romantic lighting. But some people might wonder where the paper towels or hand dryer is, since their paper towels are in a dispenser that appears like nose tissues. Cafe Maude did impress me with how they served the bill, and briefly distracted us from all the not so nice experiences. The bill arrived inside an old children's book. They had torn out the pages but you could read the stamp from a library in Oklahoma, and an enormous amount of other diners that added their own names and little quotes too. But really, shouldn't the taste and amount of the food be the best thing left in our memory?
Disappointingly boring. After hearing about this new South Minneapolis eatery from a friend and that they tend to attract a big crowd, I decided to have an early lunch there with my two sons - all of us foodlovers. No one greeted us so we chose a table and sat down and only a handful of patrons at the time. The first thing one notices upon entering is the center-court bar that occupies some major square footage. Glancing at the menu is strange at first becasue the lunch menu also includes about half a page of breakfast items. The general fare is soups, salads, panninis and burgers. A separate sheet menu showed 3 daily specials that were uninteresting to any of us. We ordered the crab cake sandwich, smoked chicken panini and Greek salad. Upon arrival, the dishes were plainly presented (not necessarily a bad thing but not as appealing as it could have been). The crab cake sandwich contained 2 thin silver dollar-sized crab cakes that had a decent texture and were tasty but too small to thoroughly enjoy any crab flavor. It was topped with one tomato slice and some lettuce on a white bun - quite boring. The smoked chicken panini was served with a few mild cheeses on non-traditional panini bread, something like you might see at a fast food place. Finally, the Greek Salad had two half-dollar sized zucchini fritters that were fresh and delicious but were buried on the side of the salad and so disappointingly small that I walked away hungry. They should have been triple the size or maybe a few more in the dish would have been quite tasty. Also, I have never had a Greek salad without tomotoes although there was plenty of julienned vegetables and feta cheese. All the dishes were noticeably underseasoned. The sandwiches were supposed to come with mixed green salads but the server did not bring them and did not appear to know much about the dishes. No substitutions are allowed. Overall, our experience was not satisfying and I doubt we would go there again, especially with their overpriced menu.
