In a neighborhood dotted with Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants, Ngon greets visitors with other-worldly surprises: Parisian jazz dances from overhead speakers, crown molding and decorative chair rails create decadent mazes on butter yellow walls and antique scones and chandeliers add a candlelit glow diners atop dark work tables gobbling the restaurant's famous onion-infused pho. It's a Vietnamese bistro, celebrating the French influence in the region, reflected in the diversity of the dishes. Best steak ever

Once you get past the hospital-like curtain next to the front door, Ngon has a very nice interior. Simple but classy. I do understand the necessity of the curtain though as there are tables directly behind it.

I ordered a rabbit dumpling appetizer with an entree of grass-fed steak with vegetables and rice and the dessert special of ice cream cheesecake. The meal was wonderful, one of the best I've had in a long time.

The only other thing I would mention about Ngon is that the waitress (Leslie) seemed to actively resent serving us and when she took our check, she tucked the folder into the back of her underwear. Nothing else to say about that.

You should try it anyway, great fusion food.

  • Pros: Delicious organic ingredients
  • Cons: Waitress

The Details on Ngon Vietnamese Bistro

What to Drink:

In true French fashion, Ngon offers an extensive wine list. Our favorites are the biodynamic wines, which honor the Earth and its cycles. A glass of biodynamic Domaine Viret Solstice is $8 and entirely worth it for its deep, earthy taste. For local flavors, try a bottle of Syrah from Minnesota's Winehaven Vineyard.

When to Go:

It might be French and Vietnamese, but this spot is all about local ingredients. Check out the Locavore Happy Hour weekdays from 4pm-6pm, when Asian-fusion locally focused small plates, like duck and walleye, are only $5.
