Like so many old places do, this one thrived for many years, then died for many more. Then it was fully restored and superbly staffed to become a great gathering place. The Downtown Clubhouse, with its Italian marble floors and hand-sculpted and painted plaster ceilings, sticks to its English roots and is a decidedly formal place for a large party or wedding reception. Far from stuffy, its wood-burning fireplace, drooping chandeliers and oak-paneled adjoining bar make the mood cozy.
