What People Are Saying About St Paul Grill

In Short – Located in the historic and posh Saint Paul Hotel, the Grill is high-energy. It's popular with the dressed-up pre-theater crowd, and a gathering spot for political powers-that-be. First-time visitors should peek inside the hotel's fancy lobby (circa 1910) before stepping into the dining room's moneyed atmosphere--mahogany woodwork, gleaming brass, booths topped with frosted-glass partitions and tables set with heavy linens. The standard grill offerings include beef tenderloin and the signature bourbon pork chops.

Editor's Tips

Parking:
Downtown meters run out at 4:30pm, so it's free if you find a spot. Otherwise, valet costs $5-$15.
What to Drink:
Single-malt scotches, classic martinis and private-label wines bring a crowd all their own.
Where to Sit:
Request a table overlooking Rice Park--view twinkling lights and sparkling ice sculptures in winter; flowers and fountains in summer.

Special Occassion Must Stop

by artshow824 at Citysearch

As an annual stop, my family and I visit The St. Paul Grill for either or both Easter or Mother's Day because the food is great, the service top notch and the view of the garden and Rice Park is stunning. When I have an important business lunch, I try to go to The Grill for the Grill Charlies or the Salmon with 7 Spices. I recommend asking for a Rice Park view seat when making a reservation.

legendary

I had dinner there after RNC and what a treat it was! Steak was perfectly done, sides were plenty to share, my wife's Halibut was second to none and the server was a pro. We asked to be near the windows and they set us up in a great booth overlooking the gardens; we couldnt have asked for a better spot. We let the staff know we were going to take out time and they went above and beyond to respect that while also being very attentive and right there when we needed them. We were there on an event night, and though parking can be an issue in downtown St. Paul, the St. Paul Hotel had valet available for us. All in all it was a great night, and I certainly got what I paid for. By the way, the chocolate dessert we had to finish off the night was great.

A class act.

by uradel at Citysearch

My husband and I returned last week and had a great dinner. The food is above average and they have a great wine menu as well as some choice single malt scotch selections. I do love the dark wood interior and linen clad tables. Do not come here if your sole purpose is to eat cheap. This is about dining and dining well. It's a very civilized atmosphere and we appreciate that. There is easy parking across the street at the ramp near Kincaid's. If you make it clear to your server that you will not be rushed they will honor that request. In fact, that is something I make clear in all restaurants and it is never a problem. Restaurants want their patrons to communicate their needs. We have also used them for business meetings and executive sessions and they have been more than accommodating. This place is a class act.

  • Pros: This reminds me of the old school steak houses I grew up with, like Chasens.

Only average

by plfear at Citysearch

Just average. Steak was bland. Nice atmosphere and view. Candles and white linen tablecloths. A little too cozy. Best part of the meal was the mashed potatoes. Nothing special. We won't be back. Too much to spend for only an average meal. You could get the same kind of steak at Outback Steakhouse for a lot less money. Actually, Outback may be better.

  • Pros: ambience, view
  • Cons: bland food, poor parking situation, expensive

Parking nightmare

by KATYARIA at Citysearch

I agree on the parking deal. They do not tell you that they will not valet your car in advance and you will end up 30 min late for your reservation. I agree with other reviews that the staff cannnot wait to remove your plate. I was still eating and all the plates of my companions were already removed. A major pet peeve of mine. Steak was good, they get a little over exotic with bbq sauce. Hash browns are great and salads are as well. Not the best for the price.

  • Pros: bar, atmosphere
  • Cons: valet parking, service, food
