Editorial Review for Fabulous Fern's Bar & Grill – by Annamarie Cumpston

In Short
This large restaurant on Cathedral Hill manages to be both family- and date-friendly. Known for its sandwich with a twist, like the generous, sweet hot-mustard topped Cajun meatloaf or hot hoagie with ham, pepperoni, mozzarella and bacon, it also manages to have some healthy options. The 12 salads include the sharp Caesar (with grilled chicken, tuna or tofu) and the strawberry spinach salad with Mandarin oranges and sesame seeds.

We found Fabulous Ferns not so fabulous. We took our 4 grandparents there for a post theater Christmas get together at 4:30 pm on a Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was not busy but we had several very long waits for our waitress to check in on us. My son-in-law ordered a hamburger and fries which came out with rice pilaf instead. Pilaf and hamburger? Interesting. After bringing out all but one dinner the waitress asked if there was anything else we needed and then realized one salmon dinner was missing. She went to check on it and said it had burned in the oven and would take 5 mins to cook and that she'd bring me a bowl of soup if I liked. Several people at our table had fries with their meals which were cold. The salmon dinner never came and 25 mins later everyone had finished eating so I told the waitress to cancel the meal. She said there was nothing she could have done about it but she never came back to our table during that 25 mins to check on us or to explain what was going on. I talked to the manager and he said we wouldn't be charged for the meal that I never got.....thanks.

Cons: Won't be going back

The name sounds like bragging, but it really is a fabulous neighborhood secret.  See the full editorial review.
