St. Paul >Golden Chow Mein Restaurant
My husband and I have been customers of
the Golden Chow Mein since they opened. When we lived in Newport until 1996 we were there at least once a week, sometimes more with friends and family.
Since we moved to Arizona, we make it a point to stop in when we arrive and again the day we leave. We cannot get the quality of Chinese food here and we always try to talk the owners into moving to Phoenix.
I do not know of anyone who has had a bad experience with the food, service or prices. I will be visiting the Twin Cities in another few days and will make it a point to stop in and have a fabulous Chinese dinner.
Best smaller Chinese Restaurant.
I usually go out with colleages to various restaurant for lunch 2 or 3 times a week. Our lunch time is 45 minutes to an hour. My friends recommended Golden Chow Mein to me. I now almost eat there 2 or 3 times a month. They serve the dishes in a speedy way, yet the quality is quite good. The price is only 1 or 2 dollars more than a typical fast food. They stir fry the vegitables in the way that preserve the freshness, but still tasty. My favor dish is Chicken Almond Ding and Shrimp Lowmein (soft noodle.)
I recommend people try out this place, you will not be dispointed for the friendly service, quality food, and almost fast food price. Because the portion is so big, especialy on the combination dishes, you may even have left over for diner.
Best eating out place for our neighborhood. I have been eating at Golden Chow Mein since the late 80's and the quality has not changed a bit. It is a window in the wall but inside this window is some of the most amazing food. First and foremost is the BBQ Pork and Kung Pao Chichen. They are mind-bogglingly good, really. I wept openly the first time I had their roast pork it was so good. Next is the Chop Suey Chow Mein which is fantastic. There are very authentic dishes throughout the menu. Service was perfect and smooth. Order comes just perfectly on time. If you go as a single or double you may be seated next to another person or couple which in my opinion is a benefit. This is one of my favorite places in the world. Oh, try Beef Subgum Chow Mein. You won't be disappointed.
Delicious and great value!.
Excellent Chinese food and very good prices! The whole menu was full of wholesome classic dishes so it was difficult to choose but I finally settled on the Chicken Almond Ding which was served steaming hot, and packed with veggies and chicken. Outstanding flavor and a good sized portion, ingredients fresh.
Service was quick and the owner was very friendly and attentive. A lot of regulars came in to pick up takeout food while we were there and the owner seemed to know everyone well..
The decor is unpretentious with traditional Chinese elements such as the red wooden slats over the foyer.. The brick and stucco architecture of the building provides a quaint old St. Paul ambiance..
It seems like there are hundreds of little Chinese restaurants in the Twin Cities but this one is a rare gem and stands out above all the rest I've tried, including the spendier ones... 5 stars!
Family style budget restaurant.
I visit this restaurant about once or twice per week. Sometimes I spent around $25 to feed a family of four, and still have leftovers for lunch next day. The food, especially the combinations, are fairly good size. Several dishes are created by the owner, chef, Mr. Qu. It has strong Southern China tradition, with emphasis crispy stir fire of vegetable to preserve the freshness. My favor dish is the Chicken Almond Ding and the beef Lo Mein (Cantonese soft noodle.) The shrimp with vegetables, with its special (yushang) sauce, is quite delightful.
I consider myself an international traveler. The above dishes are almost the same quality as the foods I enjoy when visiting South China.
Golden Chow Mein Restaurant. Our Family eats here at least once a week and have been for years. We love everything but, one of our favorites is the FRIED CHICKEN DINNER. I know it sounds funny to say that since it is a Chinese Restraunt but, the seasoning they use on the chicken is the best ever!! The portions are great. I would recommend Golden Chow Mein to everyone. It's the best.
Golden Chow Mein. I have been going to this restaurant for years. You get alot of food for about $6 All the food is amazing.
BEST CHINESE FOOD EVER!!.
I have been eating here 4 days a week for the last years. I have yet to taste something I didn't absolutely love! Everything is good, and the portions are huge! I always have some to take home for later.
Some of my favorites include:
*cream cheese wantons
*egg rolls - hand made!
*chicken almond ding
*sweet and sour chicken
*egg foo young
*kung pow chicken
*lo mein- 5 different kinds!
*chow mein- made to order and quick serve!
*fried rice- always delicious!
I love everything they have to offer. The foods I mentioned above are just a small taste of what they serve. You can't go wrong eating here. There are a ton of stir fry options with and without meat. There is something here for everyone to enjoy!
Best Shrimp and lobster sauce in town. Golden Chow Mein IS my favorite restaurant in town. Their shrimp and lobster sauce is to die for. Their combination platters are excellent and fill you up for about $6. I've been getting takeout orders almost weekly for over 10 years, but have dined there since the day it opened. The owner is very friendly and knows me by name--can usually guess what my order will be. I'm glad the restaurant is located nearby, so I can get my Chinese food fix. If this place ever went public and sold shares, I would buy into it. It is a goldmine.
AMAZING. This is my favorite chinese restaurant! I recommend it to everyone I know, because in these times we all need good chinese food at a reasonable price, and this place has it! The small restaurant has been in business for 22 years they've told me, and they've mastered the art of good service, good food, and pretty good prices. If you're looking for a good deal I would recommend the combinations, you can get 3 different things for around 6 dollars. Also the sesame chicken, lo mein, and egg rolls are my favorite! All food is cooked to order and if you call ahead the food's there waiting for you when you get there. Plus I have some picky kind of "health conscious" friends and they're really good her because they can customize orders to have no salt or no msg, or more veggies/less meat, or whatever you like. It's all really good and I'll be repetitive, but I've been to many chinese restaurants and it's cheaper than pretty much all of them.
