Editorial Review for Gabe's by the Park – by Christopher Bahn

In Short
Standing on the edge of St. Paul's Como Park, Gabe's provides sanctuary, beer and sandwiches for local fans of the Green Bay Packers. When the Saints sell out nearby Midway Stadium , this bar because a healthily crowded pre- and postgame hang. While the central bar area is often choked with smoke, the outlying booths are comfortable for dining. The sandwiches, salads and appetizers are all above average.

Rotating dinner specials start at $8.99 and have included a fried shrimp special, an all-you-can eat fish fry and a 16-ounce strip steak.

Sports Bar

This isn't just a football bar, though: When the St. Paul Saints minor league baseball team set up shop at Midway Stadium, Gabe's got in on the ground floor by providing a bus ("the Big Pig") to and from games and selling tickets to bar patrons.

I love Gabe's...everytime I go there, I end up leaving with a new friend or two. People there are just so friendly and you wind up talking with everybody there. Check out Gabe's before and after Saints games for some real fun! This is a great one-of-a-kind place if you're like me and fed up with the coookie-cutter Sportsbars (i.e. Champps, Joe Sensor's).

Pros: Unique, Fun

Cons: No DJ

I think Gabes is one of the last bars on earth where people are people and the staff remembers your name and the last conversation you had the last time you were in. They upgraded the tv's - cleaned it up, got a jukebox and repainted. You could compare this bar to Cheers - where you feel comfortable and can get some great homecooked food. Gabes caters to all sports groups and has a great banquet area. Lots of new specials and late night hh, it's just a great place or hh or family dinner.

Pros: Always a special going on

Cons: No dj
