Editorial Review for Andy's Garage – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
The Beach Boys and Buddy Holly play on an old-fashioned Wurlitzer jukebox. Pictures of Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra hang on the dining room's cinderblock walls, and two tall garage doors open up onto the parking lot when weather permits. The menu promises a special treat for kids who spy Mr. Potato Head in the restaurant. The smell of onion rings hits you as you enter, a prelude to the burger-and-fries menu.

The original Andy's Garage location on University is in fact closed, but owner Dee Traudt has opened a new "Garage" in the Midtown Exchange building on E. Lake Street in Minneapolis. The menu remains unchanged food-wise, but may have been downsized. Portions and flavors certainly have not been downsized, and this is still one of THE BEST places in town to grab a big, juicy, perfectly cooked burger with all the fixin's, and a generous side of hot, thick (steak-style) seasoned-just-right fries. If you still have room in your stomach after your meal, spring for one of Dee's amazing shakes or malts--creamy smooth and LARGE! you get the malt glass AND the tin!!! prices are very competitive especially for the amount of food you get, and the staff is very friendly and eager to please. You might even catch Dee waiting tables or manning the cash register on busy nights (which is nearly every night). I don't know how much of the charm of the old location has transferred to the new one, but I imagine that Dee won't have let very much of the classic diner style escape. The only real downside is that when Andy's is busy, it can get noisy and somewhat slow, but hey, that happens at any restaurant. This one is definitely worth more than one trip!

This restaurant closed at the end of 2006! It is unfortunate because the food here was always good. Hope to see another restaurant here!
