Husband and I went looking for true Shanghai food. Ordered the 5-spice sole fillet, and it was amazing. Fillet was cut into strips and battered and fried. It was light and pillowy. You could not tell where the batter ended and the fish started. The seasonings were in the batter. The dish came with strips of pepper, onions and ginger, but no sauce. Did not need sauce. Very flavorful. Pork dumplings (bao) were very tasty! Husband ordered chicken with black beans and chow fun noodles. Also very good, but much more subtle in flavor than black bean dishes at other Chinese restaurants. Prices were appropriate: Sole $15, chicken $10, pork dumplings $7. Would definitely recommend. (Have not tried the buffet.)
I've been going there with my family for years. Our favorite dishes are peking duck (two ways: Flour tortilla wrapped crispy skin, and stir-fry with green beans, yum!), 5-spice squid, Steamed Pork Bao (best in town!), and I can't remember the name of the last dish, I think it's call Lion's Head with Vegetable. Don't worry, it doesn't involve eating exotic animals. It's actually large pork meatballs simmer with napa cabbage, bamboo shoots, and shiitake mushroom. Very flavorful. Our experience there have always been pleasant. They are quite authentic, but you do have to know what to order
Have been coming here for over 15 years - consistantly exceptional service and quality of food.
Authentic chinese food with great service. A neighborhood favorite and beyond!
My favorite restaurant - we feel like family when we come here. A great neighborhood fixture!
The people are friendly the atmosphere is inviting the food is outstanding. I have made it my good to try everything on the menu , a most enjoyable meal.
The chicken with garlic is one of my favorite meals and its always amazing! Today it was perfection with my Chinese greens. Thank you.
After hearing many good things about the Grand Shanghai, a few of my friends and I decided to try it out one Saturday evening. This is definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Twin Cities! The wontons on the appetizer menu are a must have and the beef lo mein was superb. Two of my friends had the lemon chicken and the third had the pork lo mein and none was disappointed. If you happen to be in the area, I highly recommend the Grand Shanghai!!!
I have never had better peking duck
than what I have been served here. It is available in one, two, or the full three courses.
They have other food here as well apart from the usual american popular chinese "junk food." They are kings of the bamboo steamer.
If you come in here and have some dumplings, pork bao, and the duck with a couple of friends, you'll see why I gave them five stars.
Big eaters delight as the Buffet is a
real bargain at under $8.00 for lunch
as far as selection? Yea OK a bit limited but for the money it still is a bargain and what they do offer is very good. Atmosphere? Well if you are hungry that does not matter and while the place is not fancy it serves very good food and I am likely to return for this lunch buffet. Just east of Hamline on the very trendy Grand Ave, Parking can be a tricky on weekends but most weekdays it just takes a bit of parallel parking skills.
