This Italian place has the kind of goofy quirks that make it more fun than the chain pasta joints.

Don't Waste Your Time. Went there with my boyfriend to celebrate an anniversary...we ended up having to choose a completely different restaurant on a different night because of this restaurant. The waitstaff was very young, and obviously inexperienced; took a very long time even to get our water refilled. My b/f ordered veal marsala, which looked more like a salisbury steak TV dinner! The veal was rubbery and grisely, and the "marsala" sauce looked more like a brown gravy. The pasta side of "rigatoni and marinara" that came with the meal was undercooked (NOT al dente) and the alleged marinara tasted more like canned tomato soup.

I ordered a shrimp alrfredo, again, with undercooked pasta. The alfredo sauce appeared curdled and tasted as if it was made with sour milk (I could get something far superior from a jar). There were four large shrimp, unpeeled (LEGS INCLUDED.... :S) and very fishy tasting. The salads were very bare bones--lettuce with one slice of cucumber and one slice of tomato, and I received a house salad when I ordered caesar. The only thing good we ate was the calamari. Our waiter was nice enough to take off our entrees, and we received a $10 coupon for our unhappiness, which unfortunately we will not be going back to use.

Next time go to Olive Garden... :(

Doesn't live up to potential. Having traveled in Italy, I was hoping this would be a place that reflected the trattoria tradition there, but I was disappointed. The bread and salad were substandard (house salad had a pink tomato--at the peak of fresh tomato season--and was drenched in oily dressing), the entree (a rigatoni with chicken and sausage) was swimming in oil, and the service was slow and inattentive. Prices were fair, if the food had been better. Overall, the impression was that they just didn't care.

Won't go back. Our party of four decided to try the Trattoria for dinner on 7/24/07. We waited at least 10 minutes in a mostly empty restaurant before anyone acknowledged our presence. Though we found the outdoor seating, appetizers and wine to be just fine, the main meal was rather disappointing. Two of two pasta dishes were undercooked and of two meal-sized salads, one contained a black twist tie that my husband almost swallowed! When this was brought to the attention of the staff, they indicated they use heat-sealed containers for all food, apparently meaning that the twist tie could not have originated from their kitchen. When we asked about removing the salad from the bill, we were presented a $10 coupon for next time. After essentially being insulted and experiencing a less than mediocre meal, there will not be a next time.

Now that's Italian. I went to Michelangelo?s with my 45 yr old dad on Saturday. THE FOOD WAS GREAT!!! That place is 90% perfect - I would have shown that with 4 1/2 stars but I couldn't :-( There were no flies or bees (Well, there was one) & the service was terrific! We also got to sit on the porch even though we weren?t supposed to because it was just me and my dad. But I must admit the place was a little pricey. I would recommend this restaurant to people ages 9 and over. (It's not really a great restaurant for kids.) So if you?re looking for a good Italian restaurant I highly recommend Michelangelo?s. CB

I am that 45 year old Dad. We were curious as to what we'd find since the other reviews were so different. We decided to pay attention to previous reviews to see how our experience compared. My daughter and I agree the food is great. Entree's are in the teens to twenties but worth it. I had the Filleto Gorgonzola after considering the Saltimbocca & another special dish. I wanted to roll around in the white sauce or lick my plate but I refrained from both. The waiter (Dan) & chef were great about making Fettuccini Alfredo with chicken on request for my daughter. Atmosphere was a plus as the evening was perfect for outdoor seating and yes the staff did flex and seat the two of us at a table for four. It appears the restaurant does not like to seat tables for two outside, so if you get the excuse the tables are reserved and nobody is seated, push the staff a bit. The staff was young but very attentive picking up on the fact this was a date night with my young daughter always keeping an eye on us from afar so I could easily signal for service as needed which wasn't required. Ditto on young kids only because I think you'll want to float away with the experience and I did not see a kids menu.

I am at a loss as to how someone compares this place to Olive Garden. Food is great & if you treat the staff as people I think you'll find yourself w/reason to return like us.

Overrated and Overpriced. We have been told to try Michelangelo's for some time. We chose a Thursday night. The place was pretty quiet, just a few tables. The restaurant appeared to be manned solely by teenagers, including the kitchen. We had heard of the true Italian ambiance and chef. We did not see any of that here. We ordered two pasta dishes which came with a simple salad (the olives on the side were memorable but nothing else was). The tortellini was good, but expensive for that kind of dish. My spouse asked for one rigatoni dish, but another one arrived. This dish was so covered in olive oil that it was difficult to taste anything else. We did not say anything until the end of the meal which was a mistake. The waiter appropriately apologized for bringing the wrong dish but took no other action. Overall, we paid $65 for two pasta dishes and two glasses of wine. We are not opposed to spending much more on a memorable meal and we often do at other small Italian restaurants in the Twin Cities. This one was a major disappointment and we will not rush back. (I recommend you avoid this establishment! We would have received a better meal and much better value at Olive Garden.)
