Avoid – We went to lunch here and we weren't greeted and we waited since it said wait to be seated and then when "Flo" came around the corner, she didn't walk us to a table she said there's open tables near the window and pointed in the direction. The water tasted bad the food was sub par and cream puffs had the smallest amount of cream cheese I have ever seen in a cream puff. Some of it tasted good but over all eww.
Very tasty Cantonese food – I love the food here. It is well-prepared and tasty. Is the decor tacky? Yes. Do I think the buffet is perfectly maintained? Not always.
But I love the food. The egg rolls are crisp and have a complex and very pleasing flavor. The BBQ pork fried rice is just delicious. The Chicken Cashew has lots of veggies and no unidentifiable gristly pieces of meat. Even the hot and sour soup from the buffet is good (I usually ask for a little vinegar to tang it up). There are lots of other tasty dishes, but these are my favorites. I even like the steamtable chow mein, and that is VERY rare at most Chinese restaurants.
As another reviewer said, close your eyes and enjoy the food.
Seriously sub-par – Please do not visit the Red Moon cafe. It was full of people when we went, and the single buffet counter was all out of food during the lunch hour. Oddly enough, this food was tasteless anyways, which is odd why it attracted so many people. Drinks are extra and so is ice creame/dessert. For lunch there was one counter with several choices as well as soup. Anouther counter held very old looking salad and fruit from cans.
Do yourself a favor and save your money for some place else. This is not a bang-for- the-buck place to eat. It's relatively cheap ($7 for lunch) but the food is over proportionally bad. Also as mentioned, drinks aren't included.
Best Chinese Buffet in Eden Prairie – There are a lot of Chinese buffets in the Eden Prairie city limits. None of them are great, but the best is Red Moon. They have the best selection of buffet items and keep everything fresh. No Chinese employees here though, from what I saw. I guess that doesn't make much of a difference. You will leave very full!
Worst Customer Service – I'm asian and usually like to stick to authentic asian restaurants but authentic cuisine does not mean rude customer service.
We ran out of rice at home so stopped in Red moon to purchase a bowl. First they didnt want to sell just a bowl of rice then they said ok. They charged $2.15 for 1 bowl of rice!
I decided I was in a bind and said ok. I tried to use my credit card since I didnt have cash on hand. They laughed and said I couldnt use my card.
I looked around for a sign that stated a minumum purchase amount for credit cards and didnt see any. They said they would be charged fees around $0.30. I offered to pay the extra 30 cents to cover the fee and still they declined.
Then I tried to pay with a check. They laughed again. Again I looked for a no check sign, none. The lady said if it was a bad check it would cost them $0.60.
I left and tried Pei-wei a corporate americanized asian restaurant and was treated much differently. One box of white rice actually cost only $0.50 and they didnt have any problem with me using a credit card.
Usually I like to support small asian restaurants since they have to compete with larger corporate restaurants but Red moon is not one of them.
no joking best chinese – Ok, let's be honest, this restaurant is as run-of-the-mill as you can possibly find in the Twin Cities when it comes to style. They have strange caucasion waitresses during the lunch hour (not a problem, just interesting and well, DIFFERENT!). The decorations are fine, nothing special. The buffet is good but not gratuitous like those trashy look-alike China buffets.
BUT STOP THERE on the mediocrity.
This place has the best Chinese you will find East of West of the Mississippi. Taste the food and close your eyes. The owner (and most likely this is the man who will be cooking your very own food off the menu) is probably one of the only true old-school Cantonese, true-and-true Chinese-American chefs out there. The Shrimp and Lobster sauce is to die for...and authentic Hong Kong style. The stir-fry dishes are so flavorful I could eat it every day. Even the Chow Mein is great.
Yes, my suburban parents took me to Hong Kong and spoiled me and that's why i've come to love Red Moon. But so should you. Why settle for the clowns that pour buckets of generic brown sauce on diced chikcen? That's not Chinese, it's crud. Go to Red Moon. Order. Taste. Love it.
Was Great Couple Years Ago But . . . ? – Becoming lower quality ingredients, less meat, more and more low grade veges, like celery, etc. Still the best sauce around.
