avoid on Fridays or call ahead to see if there are lots of groups booked – We drove out from Minneapolis. The grounds are pretty and the horses are beautiful. However, the bakery is expensive. My boys did enjoy the apple doughnuts. We intended to pick apples and waited in line for at least 20 minutes. There were 2 other family groups ahead of us and a pre-school group behind us. The wagon finally pulled up and much to our disappointment-they wouldn't let us on the wagon unless we were with the school group. They even made the group in front of us (parents, grand-parents, kids) get off. After already waiting, we didn't want to wait anymore. Neither did the other family who had been waiting before we were. There was no other wagon in sight. Very disappointed, especially my 2 boys-7 and 9 years old. Well, we thought-we'll go to the petting zoo-no luck-not open until 1. When I asked inside, the staff member said there were so many groups booked, they were short on staff and only had one wagon going. With all the other apple orchards in town, I will definitely not be returning to this one. Very poor customer service. Nothing like being penalized for not being part of a large group!
Grease doughnuts – My family lives in the city and it was quite a drive out to Minnesota Harvest. We thought it would be worth the trek. It was not. We bought our bag of Honeycrisp apples. We might as well have gone to the grocery store because you can't pick that kind from the trees. Thought the doughnuts and bakery goods would be wonderful but to our dismay, it was like eating a doughnut full of grease, literally. We bought a dozen and threw out 11. The only good part about this place was entertaining my children with the horses. So if you want to go and see some horses, its great , but definitely not worth the drive from the city.
Just off County Road 66 sits a bounty of foliage, fruits and fun. – In Short
Sponsel's Minnesota Harvest is big and friendly, with plenty of nooks and crannies for getting lost. The orchard's 45 different types of apples are available for "U-pick" on the expansive grounds. Bluegrass aficionados come to hear some of the area's best musicians. A large pumpkin patch sits on the lower part of the farm and draws a autumn crowd for barbecue, face-painting, a petting zoo and a corn maze.
