I just came back after looking for a Marine dress blue white hat from this store and have never been treated so rudely in my life. The woman, as described in other posts, asked how much money I had to which I responded "that's none of your business, do you have the hat or not?" She simply couldn't be bothered saying "I couldn't afford it." I told her I could get it on EBay for 50$. She laughed and said "This isn't the Salvation Army." Then she proceeded to lecture me on how they are a business not a charity. I will NEVER go back.

This is a fascinating place to browse through - there's all sorts of macho military and law enforcement stuff from military patches to handcuffs, saps and more. True, the person behind the counter could sure improve her people skills but I think that's just the way she is, no rudeness intended. Get over it and check out this great place.

How did I miss this place!. What a find! Store is well organized and lots to see. Snagged a pair of canvas boat shoes for 10.98, saw them at DSW for twice the price. Knowledgable courteous staff. Only place I've found with a full selection of reasonably priced camping gear, display cases with real bayonets, machetes and knives. Check out the leather bomber and motorcycle jackets. Stuff there is real! Boot selection is limited, but top brands.

Very rude service, AVOID. I went in to purchase military dress pants today for my fathers funeral. The clerk asked me what price range. I had no idea, so said I was open. The clerk stated "If you don't know, I'm not going to look all over for you."

I said it was for my Dad's funeral. The clerk said "I don't have time for this".

How mean and cruel.

Regretably, we do not have a stock of the formal officer's dress uniforms from periods prior to the VietNam war. Such garments are extremely rare and expensive. Your best option was to order a replica uniform, which would have been $450 or more and should have been ordered well in advance of your father's passing. We ask for your budget for an item, since these replacement garments are expensive. When you don't offer a budget, we can't help you.

I believe you asked about a tie, not a pair of pants, and his uniform was from the Korean War or earlier. If you would have called us before stopping in on the fly, we could have explained how rare these uniforms are. Generally, the Funeral Director makes this inquiry on your behalf.

Lastly, your abusive comments to the store clerk were not appreciated.

Minneapolis WORST surplus store. If there was an option for zero stars, that's what this one would have been.

A store that doesn't open anywhere NEAR the time posted on its website, and posted here on Citysearch, is worthless. ESPECIALLY since if you want to visit the store, you must park downtown, which means you gotta pay ...

Today (25 Feb 2012) I drove downtown and parked a block away from the store. I arrived at 10.30 am (it's a Saturday); I'd read enough reviews to know the owner wasn't all that dependable, so I expected to wait a few minutes.

I finally gave up at 11.30 -- that's right AN HOUR after they said they'd be open.

Frankly, that recent review from Jan 20, 2012 sounds like BS to me. I have actually been in the store before ... fortuitously I happened to be there when the door was actually open. The store is well-stocked, this is true ... but the "clerk" was anything but friendly. She was aloof and didn't bother to try to answer the one simple question I asked her.

I'll tell you what, if I am ever lucky enough to get inside the store, I'll make sure I stick around and force the owner to force me out ... she doesn't mind wasting people's time, I don't mind wasting hers.

Thanks for nothing, American Surplus!

We've refunded parking for over 50 years, whether or not you make a purchase and we can appreciate your frustration when you feel there is no parking, convenient to the retail store. Usually there are over 10 spaces directly along 1st Ave North or 4th St. North but most folks are unfamiliar with the new meters which don't have a pay hood, rather you have to walk to a pay station.

Further, we open by 10:15 on Saturdays and frequently earlier, however, we were late and will be happy to provide a 15% discount on any purchase. While we try to be good neighbors to nearbye businesses, on that Saturday, the well intentioned neighbor caused us to be detained.

Please consider stopping by again. All the best for the Spring and Summer. TB Brill, General Mgr.

Navy Pea Coat. I went with the sole purpose of finding an authentic Navy Pea coat for my son for Christmas. The store was well stocked with many options. I found the clerk to be quite helpful and knowledgeable.

The coat didn't fit so we brought it in for exchange. No hassles and the proper size was available. And, because the sleeves were a little long, tailoring was complimentary!

Best Place For Costumes in Minneapolis !. My nephew was given the role as Christopher Columbus for his school play when I was visiting my sister in Minneapolis. We popped into American Surplus Store and found the cutest hat and full costume for him!

The selection on supplies at American Surplus Store is amazing and endless. Highly recommend it!

A Must See in Minneapolis One of the Last of its Kind. The perfect place for families, sportsmen or business managers. Nicely displayed and fair priced clothing, boots and accessories. Check out the case at the rear with the leather bomber jackets and flyer's jackets. Lots of kids clothes and toys as well as camouflage bdus for paintball or hunting. I picked up a pair of waterproof insulated winter boots that were as light as a feather. Only place I've ever seen with cases of military and hunting knives on display. Paracord in 30 colors.
