Editorial Review for Peter's Grill – by Citysearch Staff

In Short
Said to be Minneapolis' oldest restaurant, Peter's is dear to downtown office workers because it never changes: beloved cramped booths, luncheonette counter, brusque service and home-style fare. The waitresses have the seen-it-all weariness of those who have been slinging hash for a lifetime. Much of the fare, and the prices, seems straight out of the Depression era, including broiled steaks and chops, sardine sandwiches and banana fritters.

Insider Tips

The Wednesday dinner special is legendary: baked chicken with mashed potatoes and coleslaw for only $4.45. Take-out is a bit extra.

The Extras

When President Clinton swung through town in 1995, his escorts chose this bustling 1914 landmark for lunch. In his honor, there's the President Clinton Special: a Canadian bacon-and-egg sandwich on pumpernickel, with vegetable soup, apple pie and Diet Coke.

This might be the greatest restaraunt in the Cities, but you'll never get to find out (that is, if you have to drive to get there)...because, as I just discovered, there's absolutely no way you're going to find a parking spot within even a few blocks of this place. No way. If you're lucky enough to find one of the five spots on the street just East of the place open, then go for it. Otherwise, you can continue the vulture-circling to find a spot, or just bail and go somewhere else.

Pros: N/A

Cons: no parking

A landmark--homey, comfort food. Hot turkey sandwiches and homemade apple pie. Roast chicken every Monday.
