Editorial Review for Murray's – by Annamarie Cumpston

In Short
Droves of businessmen, wearing button-downs and golf shirts, are drawn to the Old-World charm of the place: meat-and-potato favorites, rose-colored napkins and the legendary waitstaff. The famous "silver butter knife steak" for two--a double New York sirloin steak--is worth its hefty price. The tender pork chop with apple horseradish sauce is a winner. For dessert, order the enchanting espresso creme brulee.

Murray's is an enjoyable way to experience an old-style steakhouse in Minneapolis. It lives up to its billing and doesn't have pretense to being anything beyond that, so if visit the website and read about it you should know what to expect. For my pre-Orpheum Theatre dinner on a weeknight it fit our expectations well. The service was excellent and the food was served promptly. The trademark Silverbutter Knife steaks are very large so my companion and I opted for the 8 oz Dinner Steaks instead. The steaks were prepared as ordered and delicious. I am not a frequent steak eater, but enjoy well prepared quality steak and got it here. The au gratin potatoes were quite good. I choose the tossed salad which was nothing special, but my companion got a beet salad, which was good and more distinctive. The dining room was not busy early on a Thursday night, but it seemed quite roomy so it could accomodate being filled. The main shortcoming I have seen mentioned in reviews here is that Murray's is overpriced. It definitely is expensive. Our dinner of two steak entrees, two glasses of wine, a glass of beer, no appetizers or dessert came to $92, before tip. It is not a daring or innovative restaurant and I could see that some would call it overpriced for what you get. I believe it is in the same price range as other more modern or trendy premier steakhouses such as Morton's or Manny's.

Pros: Excellent service

Cons: Pricey, limited options for steak

My dad wanted to bring me to Murray's because as he says, 'anyone who lives in MN should try it once.' When we got there, the old charm brings you back right away. We were promptly greeted by our server who asked if we needed a few moments. Once we were set, we ordered; I had the filet of beef which I requested Béarnaise sauce, a baked potato and a caesar (per the previous reviews I had to try). My dad ordered the same but with the NY strip. The caesar was the best ever and the steak- one of the bests I have ever had. For dessert, we ordered coffee and the chocolate soufflé which takes 11-15 minutes to make from scratch and worth the wait. Everything was wonderful and the price really not as bad once you also add in the restaurant it's self and what other restaurants change that don't have half the charm. I do have to say, our server Shane was also wonderful- the way service should be!

Pros: The place it's self !
