Wonderful evening at Basil's!. The food and service was excellent! Basil's is perfect for a romantic dining experience. Highly recommended for an evening in downtown Minneapolis.
Special Event. I took a coworker here for her retirement lunch and what a disappointment. The food was average (for a restaurant of their reputation) but the service was horrible. We waited a long time for our check and I finally asked the manager to get it for us. He informed the waitress to bring it. She in turn poked her head from around a corner and yelled, "you guys don't want desert?" We were NOT impressed and our guest of honor did not leave with the memory I had hoped for her. We got better service from the busboy!
Location vs. Food.
For a special lunch we decided to take our out-of-town guest to the IDS Crystal Court on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was empty when one other table left after our 12:15 arrival. We did get a patio seat overlooking the Crystal Court and it was a quiet relaxing spot.
The food, though, was lackluster. Large portions, yes, but low on taste. I had the salmon patty sandwich and it was served on a huge bun, with stone hard tomatoes and a pile of fries that were tough within minutes. We also ordered the walleye - grease, grease, grease and the chicken salad croissant sandwich, the best of the food. Other than the location, nothing was special about this meal other than the heap of food left on our plate when we were done picking through the very average fare.
MTM Knew something. Breakfast 2/7/2004. Seated at the Mary Tyler Moore table (See the opening of MTM show for visual reference) out of ignorance. Menu had some fresh twists on the old breakfast standbys (Eggs Benedict on wild rice cakes) and it was refreshing to get doting service on a slow Saturday morning. Fresh items abound and good coffee, highly recommended for Breakfast.
Stay Away. I took my date there for a nice romantic dinner on Valentine's Day. We were seated promptly and then the madness started. It took 20 min. for our waitress to take our order and another 25 min. to get our 1st drinks. Our waitress forgot our appetizers. We asked for a manager and told him our feelings; he smiled and walked away without so much as an apology. The attitudes of both the server and the manager were appalling. The overall experience was horribly unforgettable.
Not Good at All. I was not impressed. The poultry is dry, the freshness of the seafood in the gumbo is SUSPECT. Avoid Basil's. Have a burger at McDonalds instead
quick and tastey. the service was outstanding, it was busy but the staff seemed to accomodate everyone with ease. but the best part about my experience was the food. i will be back sooner than later.
excellent.
The food is great.
Location is very convenient, because we can access it via skyway.
Last Impressions.... We've never returned... It was my intention to begin the new millenium (remember Y2K?) with a magical night on the town with my wife, beginning at Basil's. They welcomed us with the news that they'd lost our reservation. They were able to seat us anyway, as long as we promised to vacate our table in an hour. The prix fixe was exessive, reportedly due to the chef they'd imported from lands unknown. Each of our four courses was unpleasantly cold, though I'm certain they weren't intended to be. There's nothing quite like chilly, chewy venison and quivering mussels. What our waiter lacked in charm, he made up with indifference. I did not expect a buffet, but assumed we'd get salads of more than one leaf... I'd frequented Basil's before and had been modestly impressed. They've never "knocked my socks off" though, and I probably won't take my chances again.
