Editorial Review for Treehouse Records – by Annamarie Cumpston
In Short
Edgy music lovers who don't mind the dingy carpet, aging CD racks and loud music posters plastered on the walls frequent this old, little space. The knowledgeable owner, who plays punk music at a high volume, looks like he's seen it all. This is where to browse for those little black discs, whether it's by the freshest band or some Prince leftover. There's also old LPs and new and used CDs in genres like "Beat/Garage/Psych."

Honestly, this store is the best in Minneapolis. They stock stuff that no other record store in the area has. Their 50 cent bargin bin is superb for finding lots of old records and they have an amazing selection of new records, especially if you're into experimental music (this place stocks lots of great experimental vinyl and CDs, many of them extremely rare). They also have a great selection of new 45s. They may not have a lot in quantity, but for what they lack in that they make up for in quality. Also, the staff is really nice and they've held a great place in the Minneapolis music scene for many years. So, if you're into buying vinyl, CDs, or would rather get the true experience of buying music (instead of sitting on your computer and downloading MP3 files) Treehouse is definitely the place. Support this place before the cold and virtual world destroys all of the cultual and physical artifacts surrounding music that make this city so great.

This cozy dump has everything I love about old-fashioned record stores: a knowledgable staff, a steady flow of interesting new and used music, and plenty of VINYL--served straight up with minimal fanfare and heartfelt convictions. They also pay more than other places in town for used records and CDs---just bring them your sister's old Supertramp records and the like. The owner, Mark Trehus, has been around the local music scene forever. He isn't at the store as often as he used to be (I heard he has some serious health issues), but he knows more about records than practically anybody I've ever met, and he certainly isn't afraid to let his opinions be known--about music, politics, or just about anything. The manager, Dan Cody, is up on all the latest indie-rock releases, and he looks like he probably has some opinions about his favorite restaurants to boot. There are other people working there part-time, notably Clint Simonson (of avant garde cult label Destijl Records) and Terry Katzman (of Garage D'Or & Oar Folk fame), making this place THE hipster record outlet in Minneapolis. The Fetus and Cheapo may have bigger selections, but this joint has just about everything you need without having to wade through a bunch of crap in order to get at it (if they don't have it, they'll order it!). Support 'em now, before they go away like Let It Be and the Root Cellar.
