Dispointed. I went to Matts with one of my friends to see who had the best juicy lucy. We got our burgers with wonder bread bun and the burgers where dry. I think the Nook wins hands down for the best burger. I do like that its a dive though.
BEST JUICY LUCY. My boyfriend and I ate at Matt's first to try their "JUICY LUCY" and it was GREAT!! Very flavorful and my first one ever. The we went to the 5-8 Club. Nothing like Matt's. Matt's is ABSLOUTELY the BEST by far. 5-8 CLub's was very dry!!!! not MATT's!!!!!
The best old skool bar around, the ultimate in low overhead!. Okay, this place is a throw back to the fifties, in fact, I would have to say the decor is the same as it was when it opened. The fun of going to this place is that it totally flies in the face of uptight, rude high brow types. Yes it took 45 minutes to get our food, they had a waitress, a grill man and a beer tender. These people know how to work and work they did. It was amazing to watch how efficiently they ran the place. I was very pleased by the prices $1.25 for a tap beer? What year is it again? I must say the staff was friendly and the main feature of courses the Jucy Lucy. If your stuck up and think you're special and are in a hurry you better skip Matt's Bar. I have eaten in many high end restaurants and spent the previous three days eating out while in Minnie for business downtown and paying real money for a meal like $100 a person. Yes I'd much rather have been to Matt's and it was worth the trip out of the way. And if you can't figure out the neighborhood parking and can't figure out why your car got broken into, then there may not be hope for you. One of the comments below complaining about the bathroom really amuses me, if you need an extra clean bathroom and are expecting such in a place like this I have one bit of advice for the ladies, just hold it but most women can do that no problem, right? I for one recommend Matt's. I did not wait to bite into the Jucy and the cheese flew out on to the wax paper, but you can scoop it up with the fries and this burger was a gift, now my life is complete. Thank you Matt's and thank you Jucy Lucy!
The Best Burgers in the Country.... Bar None. If you haven't been to Matt's for a Juicy Lucy, then you haven't experienced the BEST BURGER in the country.. Ignore the wimps who can't handle the parking... geez get over it...
Simply put.
Simply put, I LOVE the burgers and fries at Matt's!!! The service is adequate and the food is outta this world. The prices can meet most budgets and in all reality this place meets most needs. I think the biggest complaint is Matt's doesn't meet most foodie needs... ATM, uber friendly waitstaff, split checks, and
overdone ambiance. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you get what you pay for. This spot is ol skool. Will you get good food? YES!!! will you get service with a smile? YES!! will you get chit chat and personable service with the waitstaff?? maybe not. Get over it. The food is amazing and speaks for itself. The parking situation isn't fabulous but how many times have you parked blocks away to go to a lame restaurant? You will survive, its not that far...plus with the bizillion calories your eating we could all use the walk!
Classic.
Compared to other South Minneapolis bars, the service at Matt's is great. I've waited 45 minutes at a few other establishments around this area just to get the waitress to get up from in front of the TV and take our order. Matt's has a few waitresses that are good at handling lots of people in an efficient, if brisk, way. Food at Matt's is simple and consistently good bar food with tasty hamburgers and generously portioned fries.
In response to the last guy, I think a hamburger is $3.45 or so, while the more expensive (and bigger) Juicy Lucy and other specialty burgers are around $5. Regarding ice: there are signs plastered around the whole joint which read something to the effect of: No ice, no plates--We blew the budget on napkins. It's just that kind of place. Like it or free up a booth, cause this place has limited seating.
Best HomeMade burger indeed! But anything else......
Alright.. so.. after so much hype on matt's bar, I desided to go w/ my girlfriend and check it out!
the results..
Parking: 6/10
if you go at night.. then DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE INSIDE. is very easy for someone to still since the parking is behind the location and is not private nor servilance. quite small too... good think i went at 1pm.
service:2/10
pretty much.. NON EXCISTENT!! I meen horrable.. we went in and no one told us what to do.. nor greeted us at all.. i had to go and for a waiter.. when this lady came.. she took our order and left and we didnt see her again for like 15 minutes.. after that i saw a glimps of her and quickly asked if i could have some ice.. and she just said (without even stoping to look at me) WE DONT HAVE ANY ICE HUNN! <--- that is just messed up!!
wait time:4/10
it was just to much time waiting.. bout.. 35 minuts i believe.. and my CAN of pop.. thats right.. not a glass and dont even think about refills.. IT GOD WORM. ergo me asking for the ice!!
price:8/10
truth is that is all a bit too over priced.
$495 for a burger by it self (wich considering is MN's top burger is some what ok) , $395 for a big set of fries.. (not that bad) and .. AAANNNDD... $1.45 FOR A FRIKING CAN OF POP!!! THATS RIGHT!
burger: 10/10
Truth of the matter is that is a very VERY delitious burger!!! cant say anything even remotely bad about it!
OVER ALL.. hopefully knowing this will give you an idea on what to expect. Go for the burger and bring your own 2 little pop! =p
What Happened?. Went to Matts today to celebrate Mothers Day. It was the first Mothers Day since my Moms death in Jan.. I've always loved Matts for the friendly service and great burgers but was so dissapointed today. Our waitress was rude and condescending, as was the bartender. The food was good but went to use the restroom and found it unkept and a little disgusting. I realize the ambience of Matts is it's simple menu and relaxed atmosphere but this was too much. Won't be going back for a long time if ever. The last time we were there was so fun, we had a great waitress and had so much fun but today...NOT. Took my Dad there to try and cheer him up a bit but didn't happen. Come on Matts...take a little time to clean it up.
Good food, but service and friendliness has really gone downhill ..... I was at Matt's last night for the first time in several years. The place is full of nostalgia for me - I've gone there many times after rehearsals or shows. In the past, the staff was always friendly and welcoming - - after all, we're a group that brings in a lot of business. Last night, however, I couldn't believe how rude and confrontational the waitress was! Someone with us simply commented that their "one ticket per group" policy (no matter the size of the group or how many tables) was out of the ordinary. The server seemed to take it as a personal insult. She wouldn't let it go and basically chewed out the customer for it. I think it's just as well the person ended up not ordering anything - I fear what she would have found in it! If anyone from Matt's ever reads this, please make sure all your staff remembers that repeat customers keep them in business, and many won't put up with such rude, uncalled for treatment. Please go back to the friendly service you used to offer.
Amazing Juicy Lucy's. They have the best juicy lucy's I've ever had. The cheese inside is very tasty. The fries are very good and they give you a lot for your money. Great dive bar that has an old school feel to it. Limited seating so get there early.
