Always wanted to see whose Juicy Lucy was the best. Girlfriend & I decided to try Matt's first, but didn't even get the opportunity. Went during off hours, only to find a line going out the door. The guy at the bar then barked at me, "READ THE GREEN SIGN ON THE DOOR!" For starters, who notices all the signs (especially somewhere they've never been before)? I can understand trying to keep it cool, but when it's high 60's/low 70's you're going to try and embarrass a potential customer about not keeping the door closed? Turned around, walked out, & had a pleasant experience @ the 5-8 club. As much as I like burgers, I'll NEVER eat at and/or recommend this hole-in-the-wall!
Jerks. what a poor customer service business. we don't even go there anymore because it's not worth the wait. i've heard recently they even take their phone off the hook now. bad.
Gimme a BIG BURGER. Big juicy burgers and hot fries. Can't do this everyday. But when I can indulge this is where you will find me.
Jucy Lucy!. A friend and I flew to Minneapolis a couple weekends back and we had heard that Matt's Bar served an award-winning Jucy Lucy burger. So we took a taxi to this place and it was really crowded. It was a Friday afternoon and the place was packed like most places would be on a Saturday night. We stood in a crowded line, waiting for a table to open up. I told my friend that this burger had better be worth the wait...and let me tell you, it is. The Jucy Lucy was unlike any other burger I've ever had. The cheese is inside the patty, and I didn't understand that at first (I know, Google is my friend, lol). When the nice waitress delivered our food she said to be careful as the cheese was very hot. I looked under the bun and did not see any cheese so I was bewildered. I then took a bite and had hot cheese gush onto my fingers. Luckily, there wasn't much cheese in the first bite...otherwise I would have burned my tongue. I wasn't sure how big the burger was going to be so I had only ordered one. I wish I had ordered two of them, as it's not a big burger, and it's not small either. The fries were quite good too. My friend also thought the burger was excellent, though was kind of put off by the bar-like atmosphere. If I'm ever in Minneapolis again, I would definitely come here again and wolf down a couple more Jucy Lucys.
Ex Custoemr. The customer service at Matt's is horrible. This is a small "greasy spoon" place that serves burgers that are over rated. And to top it off, the service is bad! it's not worth the burger!
worth the calories. An iconic place. One must experience the juicy lucy at least once. Matt's is not much for ambience, in fact none to speak of, but stand in line to enjoy one calorie loaded, decadent hamburger! Add to your bucket list, quite memorable.
Really???. Going to this place was definitely an experience to say the least. We of course went there and had the "oh so famous" jucy lucy, and it was decent. Not amazing, not bad, just decent. If you've never been to this place before, here's what to expect. There is usually a waiting line to be seated and it was out the door and around the corner when we were there. It probably took us close to an hour to get thru the line and I definitley saw a lot of other customers come and then get frustrated at the length of the line and leave. I guess that part of their shtick is to remain this small town bar sort of feel. So the seating is very limited inside and there is only one waitress, cook and cashier serving all of the people. And you can really tell the staff is frazzeled at the number of customers they have to deal with, because they're not terribly friendly. It also didn't help that there were a lot of customers who were just sitting watching tv and not even eating, taking up space while the line of people was out the door. So if you really want a jucy lucy, remember that patience is definitely a virtue at this place.
MN History.
This place is a piece of MN history. Great little neighborhood bar. The menu couldn't be simpler, and everything on it is worth trying.
There is always a little competition between this place and others for the best Jucy Lucy (spelled differently depending on where you go). And Matt's wins, hands down. I know. I made the rounds.
Different.
This is a no thrills bar with a "Kiss My Gritt's" attitude from the staff The noon lunch hour is a mad house. People standing in line waiting for others to leave which is great for Matts but having to sit there eating looking at Butts and people pushing into you while your trying to enjoy the JL. The burger is great hands down but I prefer thicker fri's. The tap beer I had to choke down because I didn't want to upset the bartender because she was so over worked tasted nasty! Plus, and this upset me. They don't take credit cards but did say they have a cash machine! (That will charge me 4.00 to take out money). As luck would have it I had just enough cash!
Take my advise and go to the 5-8's Club! Great service, great burger with many choices, thicker fri's, ICE COLD BEER, and they take credit cards!!
Citysearch Editorial Review. The inside of this South Minneapolis staple looks like your grandma’s basement, that is if your grandma was a fan of dark paneled walls, bar stools so old the vinyl is splitting, and Grain Belt Beer that comes in a can. This nothing-fancy dive bar is old-school Minneapolis all the way, outfitted with only two windows and relying on the neon glow of old Summit beer signs to provide the real ambience. People come from all over to Matt’s, the home of the original, cheese-filled burger, the Jucy Lucy. They saddle right up to the long bar like a regular and order the molten meat with aplomb as neighborhood residents and families chatter over baskets of fries at the diner-style tables. It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are at Matt’s. Everyone here is connected by their ability to keep from burning their overstuffed mouths on the bubbling, oozing Jucy Lucy cheese.
