In Short
In 1993 Peruvian immigrants Fernando and Hilda Palomino opened Machu Picchu, at the time, the Twin Cities' only Peruvian restaurant. The restaurant has a laid-back, taqueria-like atmospere and a loyal clientele. Menu highlights include saltados (Peruvian stir-fries that are vaguely Chinese, vaguely Spanish) and great ceviches (seafood marinated in lemon juice). The kitchen spices dishes as per requests, so specialties such as Peruvian paella are exquisitely light and hot--yet the individual flavors remain Clarion-clear.

Do not go this place for lunch. They just started opening for lunch on Saturdays and trust me, they are not prepared for this. The waitress had no idea what was on the menu, the menu was hand-written and there were only about 15 choices for meals (all chicken or beef). The drinks were cans of pop with a glass of ice and we got no refills on drinks during our entire visit. We had 5 people in our party and 2 of them got their meals while the other 3 got theirs 20 minutes later making for a very awkward situation. To top it all of - we were the ONLY people in the restaurant!!! The food was just ok - bland flavor and tough chicken - the fried plantanes were tasty but could have used a dipping sauce or something. Salads came with the meal and the waitress brough out two different types of dressing ( 2 little cups for the entire table), but never really asked us what we wanted. We did speak to the manager who didn't speak English very well and all he said was "so sorry" and took $5 off our bill which brought it down to $47 for the 5 of us. We would not go back - this was by far the worst dining experience ever! I gave it a 2 because the food was just ok.

This was my first visit to Machu Picchu. I had family visiting from Connecticut and California and wanted them to enjoy cuisine from their birthplace. Our party was a total of five individuals each with different tastes and love for international flavors. Machu Picchu's atmosphere was very pleasant. On the evening of our visit there was a live three piece band playing authentic "Andean" music. The quality of food was excellent. The portion sizes were adequate and the prices were reasonable. In our party we ordered from every section of the menu. Whether it was a "Pisco Sour" from the bar, an appetizer or a main entre the attention to detail and presentation was excellent. The Tamales were delicious, the Empanadas were cripsy and delightful. The Llomo Saltado (with beef and shrimp) was the best I ever had. Others in ourt party enjoyed the fine seafood selections of Sudado De Mariscos and Fruta Del Mar. The scallops were huge and the shrimp were meaty. I asked for a level of eight on the spice chart and they delivered! In all, we ate like kings! Job well done and we will definitely be back. I strongly recommend this restaurant for those who desire international cuisine

I have lived in Peru and visited five times. I think they have the best Lomo Saltado I have ever eaten. The meat is very tender and delicious!
