Editorial Review for El Meson – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Dinner here is a cultural as well as culinary experience--an eye-opener to anyone who thinks Spanish and Mexican fare are the same thing. Rice and meat are staples: Order anything from steak to fish. Regulars enjoy the pollo al ajillo and carne fritta. Those who can't make up their mind go all-out with the paella valenciana, which crams lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels, squid, halibut, pork, chicken and sausage into a mountain of saffron rice.

My girlfriend and I had driven by this place many times but never went in. Originally we thought it was a high end Mexican restaurant from just driving by it. We realized it wasn't when we saw the pitchers of sangria and plates of paella. The food was good but it wasn't out of this world. I had the petite filet and my girlfriend had the special, which were scallops. The scallops were great but the sweet potatoes with my steak just didn't go. Next time I am going to get the paella, it looked great! For desert we had the mango brulee, it was really great and I normally don't like brulee. What set this place apart was the great authentic service and ambience. It felt like a cave in Spain where you would see flamenco dancers perform. They also had live music that was very relaxing. Overall, very great experience and will be back soon.
Pros: Great service and ambience

I just returned from what may have been the worst food experience I have had in several years - El Meson - a Spanish restaurant located in South Minn. This evening a group of 8 of us ordered what should have been a signature dish - Valencia paella. What was served did not come close to what real paella is supposed to be. The food tasted as if the cook had poured the entire liquid from an olive jar into the rice. What was presented was an extremely sour and salty rice - seafood dish. Having come from a Spanish background, I have been served paella dishes many times. This by far was the worst Spanish paella ever. To be fair our group did order several tapas which were average. Unfortunately the main course was so bad; I can not recommend this restaurant.
Pros: Tapas were average,
Cons: Bad food
