Editorial Review for Crema Cafe – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
Owned by the makers of Sonny's Ice Cream, Crema boasts one of the best boulevard gardens in town and a charming patio placed under a quaint set of windows. The coffee beans are roasted in Italy and if it weren't for the clanking Lyndale Avenue traffic, you'd take one look at the salmon stucco walls, stained-glass windows and cloud-painted ceiling and swear you were in Verona. Flavors range from grapefruit Campari sorbet to vanilla rum.

Crema Cafe is a Twin Cities gem. Tiny and full of character, it offers some of the best ice cream anywhere. This is the home of Sonny's Ice Cream and they make all their flavors in small batches by hand. Fruit sorbets in particular are intensely flavorful. The menu is quite limited - this is a small cafe/ice cream place, not a big, fancy restaurant. I had dinner there last night with a party of 8 and we found the service good, the staff friendly, casual, and funky in an Uptown sort of way. Summer evenings end blissfully with a trip to Crema Cafe. One thing I like about Sonny's ice cream is that it is not sweet and gooey like so many others. It's more delicate and exotic. They rarely have anything that has gobs of caramel, chocolate, butterscotch, or marshmallow.

Beware! This place clearly thinks it's too special to serve customers the way a professional establishment should. If you like going to eat at a place where you're treated like an annoyance just for being there and making them ACTUALLY WORK, then maybe this is the place for you. otherwise, I'd steer clear of it. The food is not worth the crappy attitude floating around this place. yuck!
