not fancy, just friendly.
I've been going to Shaw's for two years now.
This is, like most of the NE Mpls bars, a working-class bar without pretension or gimmicks. No expensive wines, uniformed staff, or gourmet menu.
The crowd is casual, friendly, and mostly 30+ in age. It's not hip, trendy, or cliquish. The place is a bit short-staffed when it gets busy. There is live music on a relatively small stage, and at the end of the night the owner joins in on his vintage keyboard. There is room to dance, and the bands are mostly blues-oriented.
You can eat either in the dining room or the music room - though if you want to watch something on TV (e.g. a game) the dining room is a better bet. The parking is free and off-street, but limited. No wi-fi, and no place to hang up your coat.
The beer selection is not extensive. If you are a "beer snob" (or any kind of snob at all, really) you will be disappointed.
Food service is available until nearly closing, which is typical bar fare at a reasonable price.
almost had me.... I've recently started going to Shaw's this summer. Found that it was an easy place to drink with friends. However the last time I was there, I noticed a poster in the bathroom. They are a throwing a "9-11" party. So, serving Bud Lights to idiots who have no idea what that tragedy actually did to the city is going to "remember 9-11". What a disappointment. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Let's Keep This Between Just a Few of Us. Shaw's is one of my favorite holes-in-the-wall in Northeast Minneapolis. Truly decent bar food, reasonably priced drinks and frequest live music done well make it a great place to drink with friends. They've done a lot of work on the place, notably a re-vamped exterior, but it still has that neighborhood feel. Nice little walk down from the 331, if you know the neighborhood.
Great atmosphere, phenomonal food. The Shaw burger is without doubt the best burger in town, the staff was great, music was great. You have to get to Northeast Minneapolis and experience this bar. When you first walk in the door it feels like you time warped back to your first apartment that you shared with a couple of buddies, your couch had duck tape where the vinyl had cracked and there are stains on the floor you don't know how they get there or at what point in time was the stain made. But don't let looks fool you this is a Fantastic Bar!
The Shaw burger is the best burger in town.. The place is a dive but the food is wonderful. The Shaw burger topped with special sauce, bacon, swiss cheddar fried & raw onion tomato lettuce is a big gooey mess. Add there perfectly crisp fries and you are in dining heaven. Stay for the meat raffle or the friendly local banter. The Thursday night rib special is also very good.
One of northeast's many out-of-the-way taverns, a good place to shoot some pool or catch the game..
In Short
This comfortable wood-paneled bar in northeast Minneapolis could be an Iron Range hunter's haven transported south. The simple menu includes burgers, patty melts and meatloaf. The list of tap, imported and domestic beers is decent but not extensive and the crowd is working-class sports fans and neighborhood folks. Live music Fridays and Saturdays, with classic and hard rock on the jukebox.
Shaws Bar and Grill. Try the Shawburger....Be prepared to use tons of napkins! Yummy! Best Burger in Northeast...Top it off with a Captain Coke for a Very fair priced, comfortable meal! Can't be beat!
