Editorial Review for Restaurant Alma – by Donna Tabbert Long

In Short
Located in an old brick building on a mostly residential block, this place has an understated but chic Scandinavian look. Blond-wood tables, comfy banquettes and flickering candles complement the aromas emanating from the bustling open kitchen. The intimate air of the upstairs seating contrasts with the main-floor dining room, lively with foodies and gatherings of friends. With artisanal ingredients and great attention to detail, the oft-changing menu is seasonally inspired takes on traditional American cuisine.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Wine lovers will appreciate the thoughtfully chosen, affordable wine list. Many wines are offered by the glass as well.

Know Before You Go

Plan extra time for parking. There's no lot, and metered spaces can be hard to come by, especially on weekends.

Service was uneven but the food made up for it - outstanding! We all tried the tasting menu and everything was superb. There was a snafu w/ my entree (server forgot to place the order?) so the chef sent a salad so I had something to eat while my companions had their entrees. After my wonderful entree arrived (Atlantic char), we were treated to a cheese course, gratis. Classy move. Highly recommend - some of the best food in Minneapolis!

My wife and I had the tasting tonight. Nothing wowed us at all. Everything seemd to be a touch on the bland side. They use interesting ingredients, but nothing seemed to be seasoned or flavorful. Our server was the worst part of it. She completely was ignoring us. It took 15 minutes for beverages and she was slow.... No suggestions from her either. She did the classic "are you ready to order" as our greeting.
