What People Are Saying About Restaurant Alma

Alma’s unique menu is dedicated to local foods, sustainability and good eating. Located in a turn-of-the-century building on University Avenue, the exposed beams, rafters and ducts at this neighborhood bistro give Restaurant Alma a decidedly open and modern feel. A round bar greets diners, who flock to the always-busy Alma for its ever-changing menu of local, organic and sustainable fare. The blonde-wood tables add a laid-back, casual vibe to Alma, but the menu is anything but: A carefully selected tasting menu is dedicated to Minnesota farms and a hard-to-please palate. From farm-fresh…
Editor's Tips
- Parking:
- Alma has a few spaces behind the building (note that the adjacent lot is reserved for condo residents). Otherwise, there is free parking along the side streets, thought it might take a bit to find an open space. Plan to arrive a bit early just in case.
- What to Drink:
- The wine list is extensive and there's not a bad wine on there. You can also ask for three-ounce pours instead of the regular six ounces, which makes wine tasting--and pairing--even easier.
Exquisite but financially nonfeasible

Restaurant Alma was exquisite when it comes to taste, atmosphere, and presentation. The building is excellently shown and presented. The table was simple clean and elegant with a unique flare creating a really nice atmosphere. The food was delicious and well presented. The only reason Alma's doesn't get a fifth star is due to the portion size and price. Very expensive especially for the 4 bites that comprised the portion. Albeit this was one course in a three course meal but the one course was all I could afford. When I get a better job I would like to go back and try more.
Sub par service for $250 meal.

My bf and I went to Alma on a weeknight. We ordered a lovely bottle of wine and 3 course tasting. Server never came back to check on any of our food, not one course, until we were finished. I really didn't care for the chicken foie gras entree. I found it bland, a bit rubbery and unimaginative. All of the other courses were quite good to amazing. My complaint really is that for that $ it would have been nice for the server to check in with us. It also might not hurt to smile once in a while. The phrase that comes to mind is "Mailed it in"...
Cozy and Delicious

Sublime union of cool and comfortable. Ordering from the tasting menu is a ratifying experience for even the most fickle patron. Likewise, is selecting from the impressive wine list. I savored each course, but the crowning glory was the 12 hour beef roast, graced with parsnips, balsamic onions and carrot butter; paired with a French Cab, it was simply divine. The service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. I will return to Restaurant Alma again and again.

My husband surprised me with a date nite at Alma. It was our first time there. Everything about it from the ambiance, service, and food was outstanding! We both did the 3 course tasting menu. I asked the server to have the chef/bar manager choose a wine pairing for each dish. They put together a lovely smaller portion wine flight that went with each dish beautifully. The lovely Cava sparkling wine upon arrival is classy and festive. Each dish was more interesting and amazing than the last and left us both eager to plan our next date night at Alma. My husband and I both thought the celery root souffle was out of this world. Can't say that I've had a lot of celery root in my day, but the flavors of this dish just reminded us of the comforts of home. We didn't have time for dessert, so they brought me out a glass of tawny port for dessert instead. How cool, is that? Our server was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and made awesome recommendations. Thank you! Can't wait to go back!
- Pros: Fantastic staff and unbeatable amazing food!
- Cons: Not sure there are any? Parking is slim pickins.

This place is stupendous!
My Boyfriend and I recently went in for the tasting menu. Brian the sous chef recognized us and sent complimentary champagne.
In addition to the tasting menu, he sent out several other morsels gratis.
In all we paid 80.00 for two glasses of wine and 7 courses!
We love alma and if we could give it a 10 star rating we could.
They really know what they are doing there.
- Pros: Everything
- Cons: nothing they take great care of their guests
