From The Owner of Sawatdee

The Twin Cities' first Thai restaurant is still one of its best.

Tips for Sawatdee

My first memory of eating at Sawatdee is sometime in late 1980s. I always enjoyed the plum rum cocktail and the great pad thai which has always been served with lemon instead of lime. There were times that the "medium" spice level was much more spicy that I or other guests expected, but generally, "medium" is not very spicy for Thai food aficionados. Tonight, I ordered spring rolls (which were delicious) as well as the Panang curry with mock duck. It came with a standard bowl of white rice and was served on a square plate with lovely crisp green beans. It was very good, although I think that the serving size could have been a bit larger for the money. Nonetheless, it was excellently prepared and I was completely satisfied. The service was satisfactory on a somewhat busy evening. However, the decor needs to be redone. It hasn't changed much in 20+ years. While good, I still prefer Amazing Thailand with its more contemporary feel and larger servings than this particular restaurant.

Dismal delivery experience. Ordered food for delivery. My hotel was less than a mile away, so I thought it would be a good choice for a quick delivery. When I ordered, they estimated 45 minutes. The food finally arrived 1-1/2 hours after I placed my order! No apology from either the delivery person or the person at the restaurant (whom I called to find out where my food was).

I ordered Spring Rolls, a Laab Esan Salad, Lemongrass Noodles and a Thai Iced Coffee. The Laab salad was not spicy as indicated. Probably because they didn't add the chilis as described in the menu (nor the roasted rice powder). The "fresh lettuce" was not. The Spring Rolls had a foul smell to them. I've had many Spring Rolls before and never smelled any like these. I took a small nibble of one and shoved them aside. The Lemongrass noodles were...OK. The Thai Iced Tea (I order Thai Iced COFFEE) was served in a to-go SOUP container. How am I supposed to drink from that?

Ugh!

Worst Place in town. Never had a worse time dining out. If you want horrible service, over-priced food, and a snotty attitude, then I guess this is the place for you. I will never be going back.

If this could have Zero stars, it would!. We went there tonight, to have a nice family dinner before a movie. We were seated, given menus and water. And that was it. 40 minutes later, I started to get up because we had decided it was time to find a manager. Suddenly our waitress appeared, and asked us if we were ready to order. We asked her for a manger, and she tried to argue with us about how long we had been waiting. We got to there at 6:20, and it was now 7:00, so you do the math. The manager came, and there was no apology, nothing. We left. We were never given drinks, never even checked on for 40 minutes. My family and I will never be going back.

I Don't Know What It Is, But It's NOT Thai. This used to be one of my favorite places for Thai food. I don't know what happened, but last time my wife and I were there, the food was awful. It didn't even taste like Thai. We were trying to guess what the horrible flavor was in the Pad Thai and the best we could come up with was beef broth. It actually reminded me a little of Pho. Could the place have been purchased by Vietnamese people? I don't know, but everything we ordered was horrible. The prices have always been a bit on the high side, but it used to be worth it. No longer. We'll never go back.

Does the customer get to be right here??. My first visit to this place for a friend's birthday. She loves (or should I say loved) this place and frequents it about 3 times a month. She loves spicy food and regularly orders her food at the 5 level each time she visits for the last year. When we went for her birthday, she decided to tone it down and ordered the spice at a level 3. When we got her food, hers was so spicy that she could not even eat it!

We had a hard time getting our server's attention and got the attention of another. Everyone looked at us with question as if they had no idea what to do if the food they delivered was unsatisfactory. Then to top it all off, the manager came over not to apologize but asked us "which one of you is the girl who ordered wrong". She continued to tell my girlfriend (mind you-a frequent customer of this establishment) that she was wrong, ordered wrong, and that she was not being true about how she ordered in the past. HONESTLY, why would someone ever make up their food order??? She was horrible--this was on Friday, October 10th at dinnertime. So whoever she was should definitely learn the phrase "the customer is always right" or at the very least have better customer service to her patrons.

My friend has now sworn off this establishment and will tell her co-workers. I will never go back as well and will be passing on my bad experience to all my friends, and co-workers. It is a shame.

Is this Thai?. Um where do I start with this... Well if I could get past the waiter obviously being high on something and forgetting about my husband and I for 45 minutes the only thing I could complain about was the food.

I have no idea how people say this food is good. Its not authentic, terribly over spiced or bland (never a mixture of the two), and way way overpriced for Thai food. The spinach in my dish was absolute mush and the rice was not properly cooked. My husbands dish had little flavor and was lukewarm when delivered. We complained twice about the service to the manager and got nowhere. There was no apology or even a prompt that he would refill our glasses that had been empty for a good 1/2hour. There was also no sorry for your wait here's something to snack on while you wait for your food. Honestly there were 5 other tables with people at them. All of us waiting for food. No clue what was going on in the kitchen and I certainly didn't want to ask.

Overall Terrible Service! and even worse food.

Great Neighborhood Place. I've been to this Sawatdee location several times and have never been disappointed. Service can be a little slow sometimes, but the food is always great.

Great Thai Food. We LOVE this Sawatdee! We traveled all around the country and continent and still put this place in our top ten restaurants. We go here anytime we are in the warehouse district of Minneapolis and have never been disappointed.
