Great Pad Thai. I'm sorry. I have never been to Thailand, or even to a "Chinatown" in any city, and I can't even eat spicy food. But I love, love, LOVE Pad Thai from Sawatdee. I, of course, get 0 peppers on the spice scale, but it's so good, and it is never greasy. The chicken is always white meat, and clearly recognizable as such, which is not always the case at some Asian restaurants. Their spring rolls are really good, too. I've eaten at every location in the Twin Cities, and I have never been disappointed. The service is OK, because I usually go at an off-time, like 3 in the afternoon, and there are only one or two servers there. That's not their fault. When I have been there at dinner time, the service was spot-on. I have gone with people who like spicy food, and they order it spicy, and they like it, too.
Bland Thai. My parents and I each ordered individual dishes and all three of them were horribly bland and cold. Possibly worse Thai food I have ever had, and I have eaten at much shadier hole-in-the-wall places.
Great Thai food. I recently visited this restaurant during a night out with friends. The ambience is good and the food is spectacular.
The Twin Cities' first Thai restaurant offers varied levels of multi-spiced dishes..
In Short
Groups of friends sit by the cheery wall of windows looking out on busy Washington Avenue, while couples go for dimly lit, curvaceous booths in the middle of the dining room. Specify how spicy you want your dish, or servers will automatically bring you the mildest preparation. Popular dishes include the zesty red chicken curry with nice hunks of tender meat, or rama thai--plump shrimp in silky peanut-curry sauce over steamed spinach.

Excellent Service. I enjoyed my dining experience at Sawatdee. I am from Atlanta and we have several great Thai restaurants but what stood out to me about Sawatdee was the spice scale since it made ordering easier. The food was good (I had the Lob Esan & my business partner had Shrimp Pad Thai) but what was most impressive was the service. Our server was a short-haired young girl who had an excellent knowledge of the menu & was very friendly. I would recommend Sawatdee to anyone looking for a quiet, yet spicy, meal!
Horrible.
How can this restaurant have an 8.8 rating?
A 0.5 is more like it.
Strongly recommend going elsewhere. Very poor quality food.
delicious Thai food. My husband and I frequent the Washington Sawatdee, and absolutely love the food there. It's flavorful, reasonably priced, and so much better than the suburbian chain restaurants. Also brought my coworkers to lunch there, and the everyone loved it - we'll be returning customers. The Thai beef jerky is great.
Go Anywhere Else for Thai. I can't believe that Sawatdee received the highest audience rating. Last time I was invited by friends to join them at Sawatdee in the Warehouse District, we were forced to listed to loud ghetto rap, had the most surly service I can recall in years, and were served dishes with vegetables that hadn't even been washed. I now encourage everyone I know to try the King and I or Chiang Mai. Both have great service, beautiful surroundings and terrific food.
Sawatdee - great for larger group. It's not the most romantic dinner but we travel once a month in a group ranging from 8 - 14 and we have always been accomodated there. Because of the lack of romantic quiet feeling it's a great place to have a large, sometimes loud group that resembles a big family dinner. The best thing is they do the cooking and we have never been disappointed in the food/value ratio.
Hulk like Sawatdee. First off, all of the bartenders at the downtown Sawatdee get mad props. Second, get the Mai Thai, cuz it's one of the best drinks I've ever had. Third, the food is absolutely killer and the spring rolls are top notch. Good veggie/vegan options.
