Tips for Yangtze Restaurant

July 15, 2012

We stopped there for lunch today. It was our first time there and actually my first time having dim sum. I have not been so disappointed in an asian restaurant.

First getting there, they were very busy but we (2 people) got in and seated right away. Upon getting seated, we were asked if we wanted to try their broccoli or wait for the cart. We wanted to try what was on the cart so we waited. No one asked us if we have ever had dim sum or how the process worked. The waiter simply just left without asking what we wanted to drink. Water was not brought to the table either. Two to three minutes went by, with no food or drinks on our table yet, finally a waitress with a cart finally stops by to ask if we'd like to try what was on her cart. We try 3 items on her cart and she left. Afterwards, with still nothing to drink, the same waiter brought some HOT tea and left. We finally stopped the same waiter a few moments later and asked for water. So, in the 10-15 minutes we were in there eating, we finally had something to drink. Another cart stopped by and another three items were selected. One of the dish, we were told it was beef but it was actually beef stomach and we did not know that it was an extra payment. More than half the time, the waiters that had the cart seemed irritated when we asked them to repeat what they had. It was very noisy and we had a hard time hearing what they were saying and they did not want to explain what the dishes were. If we said yes to an item, they would just wrote down 5.95 on our receipt or mark an X. Our table was empty for 5 minutes without anyone asking us if we wanted anything else. By this time, we were done with the restaurant and how they were treating us. So we left to pay and was kind of surprised at the bill. With two people, two glasses of water, eight items from the cart, the beef stomach we didn't even eat, the bill came out to be $52.

Now we were in there for no more than 30 minutes and was not very satisfied with the food nor the service that was provided. We left the restaurant disappointed and still after spending $50+, we were still HUNGRY!!!!

This is not a restaurant I would recommend to anyone. The food was not up to par with the ratings from online sources and recognitions they've received from the city. Also, it was impossible to tell what the pricing was by looking at their receipt. The ratings from every website was incorrect.

Quality is all gone. Expensive Garbage!

We had been going to this restaurant since 1994. When it recently (2007/2008?) changed owners with all new chefs(!?) the quality and value really nose dived. The ingredients have been changes to ultra cheap. The taste has gone down the tubes. My family, my friends, and I used to go here at least once a week. That has since tapered off to once every few months because of the change in quality/taste. Now we would rather go to Panda Express even though it is a much further to drive.

Don't try the Kung Pao Beef, I guarantee that you WILL BE DISAPPOINTED! (Unless you really wanted a few cups of peanuts with a little beef thrown in.)

The prices have gone way up to try and compensate for their loss of business due to the recent lack of quality.

I'm really mad at the new owners for destroying what was once a great restaurant! I can't imagine it will be much more than another year or two before it goes completely under.

american chinese food , bad dim sum. they already change owner and all the chefs on three years ago, can't you taste the big different than before? the chicken feet taste weir ,the rice noodle roll looks like creamy mud, size so small. the moo soo pork is so bad , the worst I ever have, I won't go back anymore.

by the way , Best Dim Sum awarded to Jun Bo Chinese Restaurant in 2006,2007,2008.

looking for the winner of 2009!

I didn't like it. I'm sure if I liked the food items more it would have been better (I'm a chinese food and sushi fan, I thought this would be ok) but the majority of the food looked gross and weird, I didn't want to try it. The few things I did try I thought were kinda icky, didnt think anything was good. This is my own opinion though. After about a 15 minute dining experience, my bf and i left and paid $25 for i dont even know what. This is definitely my personal opinion as the other reviews rave about this place. If you want to try dim sum and you dont want to be disappointed, I wouldnt go here unless you go with a dim sum professional who might be able to help you pick out the items based on what you already do like. Just looking at them didnt help us pick them out.

Best Dim Sum, excellent Asian food, great customer service, friendly staff, no smoking (good!), nice ambiance. I totally disagree with "nirv" in that review. The Yangtze has excellent food, etc. and has won awards for their Dim Sum and Best Asian Restaurant and I think that is more important than one bad review. We have been going to the Yangtze since it opened in 1982 and surely wouldn't have kept such a faithful return if the food and service and ambiance weren't up to par. We go there once or twice a week for either dine in or take out, and Dim Sum at least twice a month. All the staff are very friendly and attentive and go out of their way to be of help. The majority of reviews are giving 4 and 5 stars, so they must be doing something right!

We have been to other Asian restaurants just to compare, but always return to the Yangtze.

Sub par.. I'm a huge fan of typical Chinese food: Chicken Chow Mein, chicken fried rice and Cream Cheese Won Tons. I tried all of these in 1 trip to Yangtze a few weeks ago and was disappointed because nothing I ordered was better than the Great Pearl in Brooklyn Park. (763) 566-1990‎.

The food was very salty and the cream cheese won tons especially were pretty terrible. They were too hard, small, and difficult to eat. The won tons found at the Great Pearl are the best I've ever had in Minnesota. You can shove an entire won ton dipped in sweet sauce and your eyes will roll into the back of your head because they're so delicious.

Not only was the food at Yagtze below my expectations, but the price was $12 more for the same amount of food at the Great Pearl ($37 compared to $25). So if you want better Chinese food at a lower price, try the Great Pearl. It's located right across the street from Whitle Castle on Zane/Brooklyn Blvd.
