good burgers – some of the best burgers around! char grilled, smoking hot thick steak fries and steaming onion rings! no beer or malts tho
WHEN YOU ARE UNSATISFIED WITH YOUR MEAL- THE STAFF ARE JERKS – My Mom and I just ate at Caps tonight. We really drove out of our way to get there (from Coon Rapids).
I love BBQ and thought that the MPLS/ST. PAUL magazine gave it good reviews.
The SPARE-RIBS WERE SKIMPY ON THE MEAT, DRY AND BURNT-TALK ABOUT BLACK CARCINOGENS. The STEAK FRIES were almost room temperature and the COUNTRY STYLE RIBS WERE SO UNAPPETIZINGLY TOUGH. THE PORK CHOP WAS TOUGH AS WELL. THE SAUCE WAS VERY DELICIOUS AND TANGY-THE BEST PART OF THE MEAL.
When I suggested getting the chicken instead of the country style ribs and that the pork chop was tough the waitress was seemingly polite and agreeable. The order was changed and the chicken was good , but the pork chop was still tough.
When paying for the check I spoke with a 30-something manager about my food and asked why the check was not adjusted to show that I did not eat the country style ribs-he was argumentative and suggested that the prices were very similar. I continued to press for the price adjutsment and he reluctantly changed the price to reflect that I had only ordered the chicken. Give me a break- why did he even bother to being difficult. I was almost willing to come back for the chicken and then I mentioned the write up in MPLS/ST PAUL MAG and the manager started touting "HOW GREAT WE ARE_SO MANY ACCOLADES_SO MANY REPEAT CUSTOMERS"---as if to say-WE DON"T NEED YOUR SERVICE. I will not go back-the sauce and the chicken were not that great.

Take a seat at one of the Formica tables, choose your favorite tune from the old-school jukebox, and one of the seen-it-all waitresses will be right over. Even if she doesn't recognize you, you'll be treated right. For the best sampling, get Red's mixed grill: a quarter chicken, a juicy pork chop, meaty ribs and two sides, served on a plastic cafeteria tray. There's also a half-pound bacon cheeseburger and a steak sandwich.
Decent Grilled Food: 5.5 – This is NOT a smokehouse, it's a grill. That said I had the ribs & chicken. Both had a little too much "crust" from the grill on them for my taste which overpowered the flavor of the food with that charcoal taste. The chicken was a little dry but other than that, it was good GRILLED food, not what I would call smoked or smokehouse style BBQ. The beans were OK, the potato salad was good. It's not really fair to rate their food on a BBQ scale as it's more "backyard BBQ" style, but here's my best attempt out of 10.

I had a pleasant experience with the staff and didn't experience any of the negative comments that I read prior to going there. The place was clean and everyone seemed friendly. It's also right off the Light Rail, so doable from downtown if you have some extra time.
Great Food – I went with 9 co-workers to eat and let me tell you the food was great (no complains here), we order ribs, burgers, salads and everything was delicious. The drinks kept coming and the food was hot, that I loved. Best ribs ever!! if you want tender, dellicious, ribs better then Famous Dave this is the place to go!! We were greeted at the door, the waitresses very nice and polite. I liked so much, I took my son for breakfast
Rude Owner – After an enjoyable couple of hours at Minnehaha Falls with my seven year old daughter, we decided to get lunch at Cap's. What a mistake that was!
When paying, I said politely to the manager that we may come back more often if there were some childrens items on the menu. The owner of the place overheard my polite suggestion, and started attacking me in a loud, rude manner saying that they are not going to have childrens items ever, that they had been in business for 28 years and have never had a need for a childrens menu and they are doing just fine without one, sorry that didn't work for you (said snottily), not enough room in the kitchen to do them, plus the dining room is really too crowded for kids!
I will never go back, with or without my children. Plus my ribs were burnt.
The right stuff – I live close to Cap's so have been going there for years. Service is generally great but there's usually only a couple of wait staff so busy days can be a bit hectic. The cooks take real pride in their work. I find most of their other food better than their ribs, but I'm not a big ribs fan. Try their Cap's special cheeseburger with their bar-b-q sauce. Tell them how you want your meat and it will be cooked that way, whether steak or sandwich. Their pork chops are wonderful, too. Get their take-out bar-b-q sauce. It's great to cook with.
MMM... Good – A group of us (11) took the new LRT from Mpls to Cap's for lunch. Not one of us had been before. All of us would return again. We might have caught them off guard for it is not a large place, but they were happy to accommodate our group. Though we needed to split up. Not a problem. The food was great. They totaled each meal for us. I cant wait to go back. P.S. I ordered the Country-Style ribs and chicken and had plenty of sauce. I cant imagine how much sauce these other posters needed. We almost didnt go because of the comments.
