In Short – The pheasant-hunting wallpaper border left over from a previous tenant is in stark contrast to the brightly colored cloths and folk art that line the walls of this cozy, 50-seat Mexican restaurant. Families and friends come for portions of Mexican soul food. The most popular dishes include the basics: fajitas, enchiladas and burritos. –
Authentic Mex in the Cities

So, as a Mexican-American California guy new to the Twin Cities, I decided to try Chiapas because 1) it wasn't a chain, 2) looks a little divey (as do many good value ethnic restaurants) and 3) judging by the name, they were not only Mexican but REGIONAL Mexican. Very promising... I had a red chile pork stew with the usual rice and beans. Stew was mild but flavorful, redolent of red chile and subtle spices. The beans, though, are a key test and Chiapas scored a laudable A minus, a feat even in California (or Kal-ee-FORN-ya as the Governator would say). They were rich with a modest amount of fat (lard I would bet--don't fear the pig...a little goes a long way and makes a world of difference)--true comfort food a la Mexicana. Rice was OK but I'm not a rice fan so don't ask me...Chips were fairly good though not as light and airy as ideal but way better than the Costco bullk pack one sometimes encounters (yuck!). Salsa was almost creamy and moderately picante, different from the usual and pretty addictive. The surroundings are clean but uninspired, service was attentive and very pleasant.
All in all, a really excellent simple meal, which, with Mexican Coke (real sugar-no corn syrup) came to a wallet-pleasing $9.20. Like the Governator says, I'll be back...
- Pros: simple but well-executed and traditional cooking; friendly, attentive service
- Cons: drab decor; TV playing bad Mexican sitcoms

This is one of our favorite places to eat in northeast. I've never had a bad experience. The selections on the menu are varied, and anyone except a vegan (most dishes have meat, cheese, or both) will find a range of items to enjoy. There's even a good selection of beverages (non-alcoholic ones anyway).
- Pros: inexpensive, delicious
