One of the guys during close time would
not let me stay for a few minutes in the bar while I waited for my ride. The temperature outside must have been in the single digits that night. He said that I could wait for it outside since I looked liked I was "properly dressed for the weather".
I asked how come there were a group of people staying inside. He replied: "These people have been our clients for about 15 years"
Food is Ok. Great deals on burgers but greasy. Beer prices are very reasonable.
AVOID this place.
When I was in there I found out it is run by a drunk lady who was sitting there bragging to some people how she is getting over on the State of Minnesota by having them pay for all of her medical insurance!
She was bragging about her rental properties and her bar. That really ticked me off.
Further, one employee found out that the Health Dept was coming so they went into the kitchen to clean it and pulled out some stuff that they said was from St Patty's Day. It was over 8 months old. It was FILTHY in that kitchen and I wouldn't feed my dog anything from that place.
In closing, everyone was drunk. Owner, staff and patrons who were way way way overserved. Guess they didn't, or perhaps couldn't, read the sign over the bar saying that it is illegal to serve an obviously drunk person.
Are you crazy?. Whoever doesn't like this bar is stupid, annoying and should be shot. I agree with UberCougar. This has to be one of the best dive bars I have ever been to since Al's ( my beloved Al's, I miss you!) closed its doors. I went to Frenchman's two weekends ago with my wild and crazy friend. Not only were the bartenders cute and friendly but I scored with one of them!! Woo hoooooo! They make a mean drink and the crowd that frequents this joint are beyond friendly. A great mix of people. Loosen up, people. I love, love, love this place!!!!! If you don't like to have fun, go to Champps or Old Chicago or maybe you should just stay home - no one likes you anyway!
Best Dive Bar. Wow - the prior reviewer needs something (stick) extracted from his lower orafice (you know). If you are uppity and judgemental, you may not appreciate this place. It is filled with characters (isn't that why you go out to a bar?), but very genuine and nice people, and I have always been served well there. I experienced my first burger last night and have no complaints. It's true a weeknight may be a more tame night to try it, but you can't beat the prices. As another review mentioned - it may seem dysfunctional, but doesn't that just remind you of home?!! LOL Good place to hide from the relatives for an hour this holiday season! ;) I'll be back!
Not What you expect BEWARE. We came to MN on buisness, and were searching out a place that would allow us to experience MN not as a tourist. Frenchmans was reccomended to us and we were thrilled with the prospects of going there. When we entered it was very lively and represented what we were looking to experience. However after being there for three hours we found out that we were badly mistaken. Service was bad, the crowd was made up of kids that appeared to be younger than 21, ( including one young lady that was pregnant and was still being served) and it was not very hospitable to newcomers. This included the fact that we played 5 songs on the jukebox, and in three hours not one was played ( 5 songs at .50 each 2.50 ) We were told it was very reaonably priced however on a Friday night we found that ther was no specials and the prices were not economical ( no specials, 3.00 for domestic bottle of beer). It is reccomended that if you are looking for a true local experience you skip this place. Furthmore if anyone from law enforcement reads this it is strongly suggested this place is monitored better to prevnt further problems from minors.
Best burgers, best times. If you like dive bars you'll enjoy this one. Everyone is super friendly - and the boose is cheap. They've got a great assortment of games and 2 pool tables. You have to be easy going and friendly though to have a good time. I've had many fun nights there, and will keep coming back!
how is this place still open?. Anyone that has been to the frenchman's, knows that it is a rough bar. I've been there a few times with some friends of mine and only because of the burgers, which are made fresh. I see a lot of sketchy characters there mainly because I think you can get away with stuff there that would never be tolerated in other places of business. I will never go back after my last visit. Weekend nights are a big no no, the staff was drunk along with the customers. One of them, heavier-set 40ish bald male, was trying to start a fight with one of the customers, he was stumbling, slurring, and yelling at the man to leave. Went to use the bathroom and there was coke residue on back part of the toilet! We waited a good 15 minutes to get a drink while we watched a group of young kids grind on eachother to horrible rap music. We had one drink and then left. Some kids were smoking dope on the side of the building. If you're going to even attempt to go there, go early during the day when there is no one there, I have had decent experiences then, but other than that. The staff is out of control and from what I've heard the owner is a crazy drunk! Be wary of going there, I know it is a cheap place to drink, but it is extremely dysfunctional.
Great cheap burgers. This little pub has great burgers and cheese curds. Prices are great, we can get out of there w/ dinner and drinks and only pay $20 each (and that is more than one drink). However, service is spotty. Some nights they are on and some nights they are TOTALLY off. We've had nights where we have to wait for 30 minutes to get a new drink (and our old drink sat empty in front of us). But when the service is good we always leave a great tip b/c the prices are so low you can still afford to!
