Not for the Maple Grove crowd

by JameskeeDee

The thing I love most about Mort's is that there's no bouncer at the door checking everyone's walking papers. At the same time there is a bouncer in the building or on the patio and will bounce fools that cannot act their age. I have lived in Minneapolis my whole life and there is always someone i recognize enjoying a beer.

The Sierra Nevada pitchers are always right on time and served up with a smile. Its been a while since i've been carded in there because its very hard to not get to know the staff. Most of them are south minneapolis residents.

Morty's is not for everybody though. Don't be surprised if you dont get served right away if it's your first time there. You might have to mosy up to Olivers if the main bar is packed and the barkeeps dont recognize you. The regulars make the bar what it is and the staff treat them so. If you have never been there, try going with someone who goes there somewhat regularly. That way you'll fit right in and be directed to the free popcorn and darts.

Tip your waitresses and they'll love you forever.

  • Pros: Jukebox, Buck hunter safari big screen, Pitcher specials
  • Cons: Will not consider having karaoke

Great bar - if you know how to behave in one.

by MountainHigh

This bar is fantastic. Always has been. The regulars are great and the bartenders are great. You just have to remember, when you're in their house - do as you're told. If they ask for ID, show it. No worries. This is a real neighborhood bar, not your local Applebees. If you want that atmosphere, I suggest you stay in the suburbs.

If you want cheap drinks and a decent jukebox, this is your place. Their pizzas and burgers are pretty good too.

  • Pros: cheap drinks, good jukebox

Avoid this place -- go to Red Dragon across the street instead

by jac67

This place is really lousy -- the bartender the night we were there was verbally abusive to two women with our rather large group. Both women had ordered beers early on and later, when they tried ordering water, were told to show ID. One of them just asked why the ID for water, and the bartender insulted her, calling her a stupid b**ch. He said he needed ID from the other woman, too. The other came up to show her ID, and he called her a dumb b**ch and stupid c**t. Both were thrown out of the bar. A guy from our group who ordered water was not carded, and neither was anyone ordering drinks. We complained to the bar manager the next day, but he wasn't hearing it -- he was standing by the bartender, even though he knows what the bartender said. The bartender has an attitude against women. Avoid this place -- go to The Red Dragon across the street instead.

  • Cons: poor service, staff are extremely rude

Horrible service, rude staff, not at all welcoming: run away, FAST!

by jbear17

I have never had worse service at a Minneapolis bar than at this place. They are unessecarily rude and disrespectful to patrons and have stated - verbally and with their actions - that they could care less whether people come back. As a business owner I would never think of calling customers profane names, but their staff seems to think it's a perfectly acceptable practice. Plus, many of their regulars are dirty drunks that make offensive comments to women (including myself) who use the bus stop outside (two, who were drunk at 5pm, once followed me downtown and wouldn't stop making sexual comments to me - blech!). Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

  • Pros: Foosball
  • Cons: Service, staff, profane insults, drunk regulars, bad smells

Terrible customer service

by quiltingmachine

This is a terrible bar. It took me 20 minutes for the bartender to wait on me, and over an hour to get an appetizer, which was seasoned fries! It was not busy at all, and there was no excuse for the long waits. They cater "exclusively" to their regulars, so unless you are a regular there, I don't recommend it.

  • Pros: Large
  • Cons: Parking, Ambience, Service

Incredibly rude bartender

by shresdk

I?ve never been as insulted by anyone in my life as I was by a bartender named Chris at Mortimers. I was enjoying a few beers with friends and needed a glass of water, so one friend went to get a water for each of us. When asked for ID for the water she thought it was odd (we hadn?t been carded for beer), but handed over her ID while asking why it was needed for a water. Chris started calling her a stupid b*tch for asking and said he needed to see my ID also. She returned to the table (with both waters) and told us what had happened. I went up to the bar to show the bartender my ID, was not drunk, and was not rude about it in any way, but he started calling me a stupid b*tch, then a f*ck?n c*nt, and told me to get out. No problem! I?ll certainly not miss a place that treats their clients like this.

Moronic staff and pitiful decor make this one place to miss

by scorpiojoe27

This place is a dump, and the only thing more depressing than the decor is the clientele. That, coupled with the lobotomized bartenders and wait staff makes this place one of the worst bars in the Twin Cities. Only go there if your life is going nowhere and you want to see if it can get any worse by talking to the slovenly drunkard sitting next to you.

Not a friendly place

by zlorfik

The rude bartender asked for ID for getting a glass of water for those done drinking. If you ask why you need an ID for water, you get thrown out while getting called every name in the book. Not a friendly place if you're not a regular. Go to one of the other fine bars nearby instead.

great jukebox and cheap drinks

by bepher9

i love mortimer's. i was new to the area and wanted a beverage, checked out morti's and i was an instant regular. the bartenders are great and actually remembered me, along with the other regular crowd. the jukebox is the reason why i really enjoy it. great variety. my boyfriend enjoys the pinball games and i became addicted to the bowling game. drinks are decently priced. check out happy hour and you will leave very happy! also have popcorn that will keep you drinking :)

  • Pros: cheap drinks, lots of space, no cover charge
  • Cons: gets busy around midnight

Neighborhood bar at the north end of the Wedge where beer dominates, but homemade chili is the house specialty.
