Just don't go
by thingstodo125

my friend and i were looking for a place to grab a bit the other night and i suggested stopping in there because i have been by in the summer time and always wanted to check it out. the summer is probably the only time you want to go, and only because you are sitting on a patio enjoying people watching and the heat. the inside of this place is chintzy. it's filled with tvs which made my stomach turn, though the real culprit for my nausia probably had more to do with the food. it's just bad. the dinner menu is wayyyyyy overpriced for what you end up eating. i didn't go for anything too meaty like the steaks or the burger (why are the sandwiches on a seperate menu??). instead i opted for a pasta dish. seriously, why spend 15 dollars for something that you could dump out of a lipton instant meals bag and heat up in your microwave? my companion wasn't impressed with his food and neither of us finished our meals. and it's not like you are paying for the ambiance, it's like tgi fridays in newsprint. there were a couple other tables, but mostly the staff just hung out looking bored and annoying. our server wasn't fast, wasn't very attentive and didn't have much personality: the only thing he actually did do was reinforce how annoying it was to be there. the place is lame.
- Pros: outdoor seating
- Cons: everything else

GET THE WINGS AS AN APPETIZER. The dining area is interesting with a cool news room theme. Our server was great and the food was delicious and not too expensive.
Below Average Food and Service

My boyfriend and I wanted to try out the News Room since it's close to my apartment and on the trendy "Eat Street" of Minneapolis. I'd heard there was a good atmosphere.
When we got there, we were a little disappointed by the menu choices and had to ask for the sandwich menu (it comes separately). Why wouldn't they just put one on the table?
The server was flaky and when my boyfriend ordered a beer, she said "I think you should have a [insert beer name] because we're doing contest to see who can sell the most." My boyfriend was like "no, thanks...." It took her forever to get us waters and it wasn't even busy.
I chose a Spring Chicken Sandwich, which was pretty good. My boyfriend got one of their Kobe Beef burgers. He took about two bites before putting it down because it was gross. I tried it and it tasted funny to me, too. The fries were disgusting--you could taste the other food that had been cooked in the oil before them. When the waitress came to check on us, we said the food was Ok and she didn't even ask if there was anything she could do to improve it. She just walked away.
Overall, the service was poor, the food wasn't that tasty or special, and we left not wanting to go back. As we walked out, the hostess just stood there scowling, without even saying "thanks for stopping" or "have a good night!"
- Pros: Nice atmosphere, outdoor seating, price
- Cons: food, service
Avoid breakfast
by ski2064

The breakfast menu is pretty small so it was tough to find something for my 3 year old. I had a ham and asparagus with goat cheese omelette and my daughter had the pancakes. While my omelette had a good taste some of the asparagus was a little undercooked and the pancakes were nothing to brag about. The service was terrible there were only three tables at the time and everything took forever even trying to pay the tab. Will NEVER go there again. And what's up with the ship in a news room???????
There are better options downtown

If you like average food and average service then the News Room is for you. You know what you'll get, but you won't be delighted.
- Pros: Decent Bar Food
- Cons: Slow Service
Newspaper-themed restaurant known for its traditional American menu and impressive decor.

In Short
Each room is inspired by a section of the newspaper, with a giant stock ticker tape winding around the ceiling in the business section and TVs broadcasting classic movies in the entertainment section. And every wall is papered with blown-up front pages. Appetizers include Buffalo wings and pan-seared scallops with caramelized shallots. Choose among 15 salads and a dozen pastas. Meat-and-potato entrees include fish, steaks and a hearty, comforting meatloaf.
Nice Lunch Spot

My wife and I enjoyed a very nice lunch at one of the outdoor tables. Knew nothing about this place until we walked by. The Cajun Popcorn appetizer was perfectly spiced, lightly battered, and came drizzled with a wonderful remoulade. Most renditions are way overspiced and hidden in thick soggy batter. Our sandwiches were also perfect. Nice balance of flavors. Mine included perfectly done fries, and my wife's included what looked to be homemade potato chips. Prices were reasonable. Service was very good, and looked to be at other tables as well. Although we didn't have any wine, the list looked very good (not just the usual suspects) and included a large selection by the glass.
- Pros: Outdoor Seating, Good Food, Reasonable Prices
Trendy but overrated

I had breakfast on Sunday at the Newsroom. I agree with the previous reveiwer it should be Bad News. First, the host was aloof when I asked if I could sit at the bar for food. The bartender serving as a waiter was good. He was attentative and friendly but then not that busy. When my food I arrived (i ordered eggs, bacon, pots) the food wasn't that good. I mean for bacon and eggs and pay $9.00. I have to say the coffee is some of the best I have had in minneapolis. For breakfast the next day I went to Peter's Grill. Had the same, eggs, etc. for only $5.50 and it was alot better. Skip this place for breakfast. Pricey for not good food.
- Pros: Good Service, Friendly Waiter
Worst Service Ever Experienced

First impression of the restaurant were good. Busy, with a lively atmosphere.
Couple of things to point out: Good selection of beers.,but beware; tap beers only come in a small glass. The glass sizes resemble a European 1/2 pint.
We enjoyed the food, and the portions were quite big. HOWEVER, i would have to say that i have never experienced service like this in my life.
It took 10minutes after being seated before we had a drinks order taken and a further 10 before our food order. We received the bill from our server without being asked if we wished any desserts or coffees and also before she had even cleared our table.
Lastnight was the first time i had never left a gratuity for my server. By the conversations we could hear by our near by tables; they were also disgusted by her service.
Overall: Good food. Terrible service.
- Pros: Good Beer Selection, Well Priced
- Cons: Terrible Service
